You may still be able to activate the OnStar. 2002+ only - by a GM dealer only. You go in, they check the VIN and call OnStar. If it can still be done they order the new transceiver and antenna package, you go home and come back when it arrives. A morning's install by the dealer. They activate it and you pay the install fee (about $125) plus a 2-year subscription ($275 ??) plus a 200 minute package ($70) good for 1 year.

If the previous owner had done it, the install was free and activation was half price. I did mine a few years ago during the "grace period" which is now over. Yes, it's an expensive toy but it works, the phone is handy and voice-activated, and I feel better with the emergency system when Karen's running around the countryside.
