Can I upgrade my radio in my 2002 SLS

Remove this ad
I have a 2002 Cadillac Seville SLS with only 32,000 miles on it and was wondering how hard it would be to upgrade made stereo and still keep my steering wheel controls. I would like 6 disk changer ( I currentlly have), RDS, and satelite radio. Can any please advise.
Thanks

Re: Can I upgrade my radio in my 2002 SLS

Be very, very carefful if you decide to replace the head unit. Improperly done it can wreak havoc with the whole car including a check engine light - I kid you not. If the serial data bus is not correctly rewired things generally go badly. Finding aftermarket that is compatible with the steering wheel controls will probably be both difficult and expensive if its available at all. If you just want to add an OEM six disk changer to the console I'd expect that to be plug and play.

Re: Can I upgrade my radio in my 2002 SLS

Do A LOT of searching, it is possible and with some of the newer wiring kits it has been made easier, but it is by no means easy. Many members will run the data buss connections back to the trunk and wire up their old head unit in the spare tire well to keep the electrical gremlins away. There are several members on here who have posted fairly indepth posts about the process to put in a non factory HU, check the audio section.

Re: Can I upgrade my radio in my 2002 SLS

Most of the upgrades on a OEM Cadillac stereo are in fact downgrades.
The only real update you can do is replace the current BOSE HU with the DVD based Denso unit (a.k.a. the one installed on the '02 - '03 cars with the navigation option). Requires some wires to be swapped in the connector (CAUTION!!!! is not a plug and play you need to swap some wires) and also you might need to change the CD changer (if is not the one controlled via the car data bus). If on your HU has the RDS logo here

then the CD changer should be good, if the RDS logo is on the bottom right corner then you need a '02-'03 CD changer too.

Re: Can I upgrade my radio in my 2002 SLS

You have to be careful when upgrading the HU. I bought an Alpine HU for my 2001 STS and the Bose speakers couldnt handle the added power, so I replaced them all with Infinity Component speakers, and added a 12" subwoofer too. You can get a module to continue use of the steering wheel controls and the cd changer, Ultimate Electronics quoted me around $200 for that, but I said screw it since my HU came with a remote. RDS is not available in aftermarket HU's to my knowledge but satellite radio is for sure, that will require yet another module. The installation is what kills you, the entire car has to be rewired. I think my bill, including the $350 HU, was just over $700 for the HU installation. I have spent almost $2,000 on my stereo, but it is well worth it....almost 2,000 watts of pure POWER!!! And no, it doesn't sound like your typical booming, teenager car....The highs, mids, and lows combine seamlessly, making me forget about ever having that garbage Bose system.

Re: Can I upgrade my radio in my 2002 SLS

I have a 2002 SLS and I have an Alpine head unit with Infinity Kappa Perfect speakers installed. And it sounds frigging awesome. If you do not have Bose it is really easy. And you do not have to rewire the whole car. You will need a head unit of your choice, a Metra dash kit, and a Metra GMOS-06 interface. I went the extra yardage and installed an Infinity subwoofer in the stock location being run from a low dollar mono amp. I am no wiring genius and it went rather easily. You will lose the steering wheel buttons (well sort of. the volume button will adjust the stock amps volume but not the volume on the new head unit). The select button becomes useless. I lost single pulse chimes but not multiple pulse chimes. Other than that the car works as designed. I say go for it. I will assist in anyway I can. Just ask
