Reluctant shifting / transmission issues and tons of codes

Remove this ad
First of all, I want to say that this is my first post. I have searched through these amazing forums for days and I have not found anything that I think would help me. Also, I will be the first to admit that I am not a car expert, so forgive me if I seem uneducated.

Here are the problems. They all seem to be related.

1.When I start the car from a cold start and put it into drive and hit the gas, my engine revs but my car will move very slowly. 3000 RPM will get me 3MPH. After it warms up, I am able to drive like normal. This has only happened once, but it is happened at the same time some other transmission issues seem to be happening.

2.Depending on how I accelerate, my car will usually shift from 1st to 2nd between 2000 and 2800 RPM. But lately, when the engine is cold, it will rev to 3000RPM, stay there for 5-10 seconds, then reluctantly shift to 2nd. (It seems like my car is not transferring engine power to moving power)

3.I used to be able to cruise at 40MPH @ 1100 RPM. I have now noticed that 95% of the time, the car will cruise at 40MPH @1400 RPM.

4.When the car is shifting (as in DURING the shift) from 3rd to 4th gear, (usually 2000RPM to 1300RPM, the tach will “flutter” (up down up down reallyfast within a range of 100RPM) around 1500RPM before finally settling down at 1300RPM.

5.When on the highway, my car can usually do 70MPH @ 2000 RPM. When I accelerate to reach 70MPH and let my foot off of the gas pedal, my car will stay @2600 RPM, even though I am done accelerating and my foot is light on the gas. It takes about 10 seconds for the tach to finally drop to 2000 RPM. At 2600RPM and 2000RPM, my car is at the same speed.

Important Info.

The car is a 2000 Cadillac SLS (4.6L N*) with 202,000 miles. I am the third owner, and acquired it at 170,000 miles. The ABS light is on, the traction control light is on (the button sticks, I assume it does not work), and it leaks and burns oil (I keep my eye on it). The car idles warm @ aprox 700 RPM with very very slight roughness.

I asked a guy at an auto parts store and he recommended changing the transmission filters.

Codes Pulled...

ABS C1214 Current: System Relay Contact or Coil Circuit Open
C1246 Current: Brake Lining Wear Circuit Open
C1248 Current: EBCM Turned the Red Brake Warning Indicator On

DIM B1324 History: A/C Refrigerant Overpressure
B1983 History: Device Power Circuit Low
U1255 History: Class 2 Communication Malfunction (Serial Data Line Malfunction)

DIM/IRC U1016 History: Loss of Class 2 Communication with VCM / Loss of Communications with PCM

P0404 History: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Open Position Performance
P1617 History: Engine Oil Level Switch Circuit

RIM B1007 History: EEPROM Write Error

Sorry about such a long post, but I tried to be thorough. I just want to make sure my transmission is alright and not about to die. That is my main concern. But any more info on the other codes would be helpful as well. This is a car with a lot of miles on it that I got for $500. I am in no hurry to spend a ton of money on it to make it like new. Thanks for any help

Have you checked the transmission fluid, or do you have any idea when the trans was last serviced (fluid and filter change)?

No, I don't know when the last time the transmission was serviced. The fluid level is fine.

Sounds kind of like the trans is going.

Re: Reluctant shifting / transmission issues and tons of codes

Also, I am not hearing any odd noises (like metal on metal) when I shift and apart from the "flutter" between the 3rd and 4th shift, it shifts smoothly (1st to 2nd when warm, 2nd to 3rd, etc)

Re: Reluctant shifting / transmission issues and tons of codes

Update.

Driving home yesterday and I get the "service transmission" message. It was also shifting rough. I pulled the codes again (3rd time in 2 days) and got a new code that was not there before.

PCM P0732 History: Incorrect 2nd gear ratio.

Is that mechanical or computer? I have a feeling this is going to hurt alot.

Hi.
Yes service transmition is mechanical, your codes dont lie. there is something wrong with your transmition.
also your EGR solinoid code. could be causing your car to keep at a hi idle?. bad vacuum because of the in-op solinoid?
i would take it stright to a dealer.tranny specialist. there are to many things that it could be for a fourm to help you pinpoint!
