Replace Water Pump - How Much?

'98 Eldorado - Have a slow coolant leak from the area of the water pump. Using mirrors, lights, various contortions, I found drops from the bottom of the thermostat housing where it joins the water pump housing. Looking from above, after removing the water pump belt cover I couldn't see any moisture on the belt, pulleys, or housing.

Unfortunately, with a bad back, I don't see myself bending over the fender for a couple hours to fix this. Does anyone have an idea of what it should cost to have the water pump replaced, (hopefullly worst case scenario)??? This will also be the first time in a long time that I will have to have someone else do the repairs. I'm not looking forward to this experience.

Re: Replace Water Pump - How Much?

The Northstar water pump capsule (assembly) lists for around $90 and the labor time is just over 2 hours, so figure around $300+ with fees and coolant.

If you're having a shop do it, might as well include it with some sort of GM dealer "Fall Special" - that way you'll get a full coolant change and service warranty, as well as someplace to fall back on in case of problems.

FWIW, there is an updated thermostat housing cover and seal gasket so if you include that, add another $40.

I think I paid $350 to get mine done when I first got the car. Same symptoms and I think the guy I was using then charged me extra because its a Cadillac. I don't think I got the updated seal or cover either.

Re: Replace Water Pump - How Much?

Hello
I had a similar leak recently and only needed the water pump seal replaced. I paid only $40 including the part.
Good luck,
RDH

That was back in the early days for me before I found this place and was still in the is the water pump over there? learning process. I didn't know you can by a N* water pump socket at Autozone or Advance for <$20. Also why that guy is my former mechanic.
