Any experience with Airtex fuel pumps?

RockAuto is blowing them out for ~$110 and I'm considering sticking one in to solve my fuel sender problem. Already tried the Techron with no joy. Was wondering if anybody has had any experience with that brand. Of course I've been posting OEM OEM OEM to anybody who asks about anything else but an ACDelco fuel pump is 3X the price. At 115000 its not worth R&Ring just the sender.

Looking at the enlarged pics, the Airtex looks suspiciously like the OEM DELPHI (GM parts manufacturer) unit.

IF you have the trunk access hatch I'd be inclined to give it a try. If you have to drop the tank, probably use the DELPHI unit.

Take a look at www.airtexproducts.com . Apparently they manufacture fuel delivery systems exclusively.

The Airtex site says they're a fuel delivery systems manufacturer, and their parent company has recently acquired ASC, a manufacturer of cooling system parts. There's no Airtex branded water pump in the RockAuto lineup, but they carry AC Delco, Bosch, Gates, Cardone and maybe Standard.

    Different year, different fuel pump.

Look at 1999 STS, fuel/air, fuel pump, Airtex drop-down closeout.

    Maybe it was Airtec.

A rose is a rose... Thanks for the research Sub, probably should have tried that myself. Since 99 has the secret access hatch I think I'll give it a whirl although I'm not sure I'll ever get used to trusting the gas gauge after almost three years

Re: Any experience with Airtex fuel pumps?

Airtex seems to work fine for lower pressures, but for higher pressures I would not trust them. I have had customers request them in trucks and blazers and have seen some fail in less then a week. The normally do not exactly fail, but do not hold up the high pressures required to fire the poppets on the vortec engines. I do not know about Caddys, but I would not even think of using them on a chevy/gmc truck.
Something to keep in mind, I just had a 2002 Grand Prix pass through here with a bad fuel gauge sending unit. They didn't want to pay for a entire pump, so I looked around and NAPA had just the sending unit for about $60, usd.

EDIT : I just looked up the specs and the caddy pump calls for 20 lbs less then the vortec. It may be worth looking into, but still, personally, I wouldn't trust them after seeing so many short time returns.

I owned 3 late 80's and early 90's Blazers and all went through fuel pumps like they where going out of style. I think each one went through (at least) 3. Haven't touched a Vortec since.

Re: Any experience with Airtex fuel pumps?

Well, I guess we'll see. I pulled the trigger with RockAuto this morning and ordered it, will be here Thursday. I think I'll hang on to the OEM that comes out just in case though. At 115,000 miles I can't see leaving an original pump in there, I just had my wife's Concorde fuel pump changed at 110,000 since you could hear it howling from outside the car. Two completely different vehicles I know but there's only so much you can expect out of some components. Can't wait until I have to change the water cooled alternator . I only owned one Vortec and the fuel pump was the least of its problems.

Are you telling me you are changing the fuel pump as preventive maintenance?

Gas gauge hasn't worked under 1/2 tank since I got the car which is starting to get old. I can pay $60 for the rebuild kit and then pay for the R&R or do it myelf. OR for $127 shipped I get a new pump and sender unit. Pop out, pop in, done plus a new fuel pump. Labor cost/time avoidance makes it worth it to me.

Ahh I see. Fix the gauge and get a new pump while your in there. Makes sense.
