overheating problem, may be hg

I have an 02 SLS with 57,000 miles, while on the on ramp to the highway under about 3/4 acceleration smoke started coming out of the exhaust. It kind of smelt like my 2 stroke snowmobile. Right after that I got low coolant on the DIC and the temp went all the way to the red. I drove it in limp mode home for about 5 miles. I checked the oil and it didnt look to be milky or anything, but it was hard to tell. Sounds to me like like ye old head gasket/bolt issue to me. All this stuff happend to my deville except for the smoke. At least its still under power train warranty. No codes except for the one that says coolant is over temp.
Any other ideas?

Doesn't sound good :-(

Are you sure you just didn't have a big coolant leak somewhere and it was burning off on the hot engine or exhaust?

Also, I have an '02 SLS with 36K and was wondering how yours is still under warranty, do you have an extended GM warranty or something similar?

Head gaskets never let go just like that. Is the exhaust pipe wet? I'd look for an external leak, stuck thermostat, broken water pump drive belt etc.

I just bought the car about 2 months ago and it came with a powertrain warranty.

Re: overheating problem, may be hg

Turns out it was only a radiator hose clamp. Still had to spend 40 bucks worth of coolant to get it in though.
