N* Swap - 03 or 04 engine into 01 car - Need to Reprogram ECM?

Remove this ad
Sorry if this has been covered, I did some searching and only found one thread about this. I've got no internet at home right now, so my searching is limited to my smoke breaks here at work.

If I swap an 03 or 04 vin 9 engine into my 01 STS, will the ECM need reprogrammed? The other thread I found said because they changed the exhaust cams sometime in 02, the ECM would need reprogrammed, but this was specifically for an 04 engine into an 01 car. Would the 03 engine be the same (or any 02 that was built after the cam change)?

Would the dealer do this kind of reprogram or would it be an "AJ special" only?

Would the car run so I could drive it to the dealer?

Anybody got a ballpark $ for the reprogram?

Thanks for any insight guys....

Re: N* Swap - 03 or 04 engine into 01 car - Need to Reprogram ECM?

Theres no reprogramming of an ECM available for any kind of performance changes outside of some individuals that do it. Dealers will not/can not do it. The ECM won't know what year engine is in the car and I doubt it would detect any difference in the exhaust cams being different (if they really are). As long as both cars have the same amount of sensors on the car and you keep the engine swaps to their common years ie 94-95, 96-99, 2000 to 2004 and keep the VIN 9s and VIN Y engine configurations you should not have any problems with putting an 03 engine in an 01 car. No reprogramming would be needed of anykind.
