Various Noises Identification

Remove this ad
This might not be a lot to go on, and I've spent the past few hours sifting through threads about various noises without a positive ID, so please bear with me here.

91 Eldorado, 40k mi, running premium fuel only.

First noise of concern is a metallic pinging or almost "cricket" like sound. I usually don't notice it until I'm on a bridge or other area where there are walls around me to bounce the sound off of. I don't usually hear the sound at idle, only under acceleration/load. Sounds like its coming from under the hood.

Other issues are a hard knock/vibration I feel when turning hard at low(er) speeds in conditions such as u-turns or turning into a parking space. I hear the same sound/feel the same vibration (its a single sound/vibration, like a loud, almost sickening crunch) when slowing down as well.

Thanks for your consideration in advance.

Re: Various Noises Identification

The knock/vibration sounds like it could be a worn CV shaft joint. Dunno about the other noises.

Re: Various Noises Identification

Thanks for the heads up about the cv joint. I'm wondering how necessary it would be to replace the entire cv assembly on both sides, just for good measure, as i am trying to put the car into good shape for frequent long trips.

Re: Various Noises Identification

Also someone told me that if I'm only hearing the cv joint during turning that I still have a bit of time? I'm planning on having it fixed this week but I still have places to go for the next few days. Do you think it is safe to drive on?

Re: Various Noises Identification

Usually you will find that the knock/vibration only happens while turning sharply in one direction. If that's the case, then only one CV shaft is worn and needs replacing....

It should be safe to drive on, depending on how worn it is... If you're only hearing it, than it should be okay for a little while....
