Overheating and A/C

Remove this ad
Ok so this is my first post on here and everyone seems really helpful so thanks in advance. I have a 96 Eldorado (base model) I was sitting in a parking lot on a hot day my car started to overheat and the a/c only blew cold air while driving. 2 days later the car was still overheating and A/C did not work at all. The A/C has fixed itself back to where it blows cold while driving but doesnt blow that cold while not moving. The car never overheats while one the interstate only in stop and go traffic. When I say overheating I mean half way inbetween red and the middle. It also helps when I run the heater when it gets hot. I am totally confused, during the time when the A/C wasnt working the compressor was not kicking in but it is now. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Overheating and A/C

Pull codes - check the sticky at the top of the main forum page. That may tell you why the AC was shutting down. You description sounds like the radiator fan(s) are not kicking on. Either one or both has died or the relays have died. I don't know if your car has one or two fans, but a fan should be running whenever the AC is engaged. Check that first. And lots of good information here.

Re: Overheating and A/C

Do a search for purge line and check it. If that is OK, get a block test kit from Napa and test the coolant for exhaust gases.

Re: Overheating and A/C

Ok so I checked the fans behind the radiator and they are not moving when the A/C is on or when the car is overheating, they do move when I move them with my fingers. When I say over heating I mean there is two lines from the middle and the third line starts into the red, it is in between the second line and the red and they are not working then. So I will start with replacing the relays tomorrow. Thanks again for all the help. I will keep you posted

Re: Overheating and A/C

Check the fan system fuse(s). You have either two large 30A fuses or one large 50A fuse in the box behind your box with smaller fuses in it.

One member pulled the three fan relays and found that the pins of the series/parallel (slow/fast) selector relay were corroded, and after he cleaned the pins, all was well.
