More times than not it's the water pump shaft seal or the water pump seal, just like Ranger said.
I always use an impact to remove and install the water pumps, but very, VERY quick and gentle bursts. If you're careful with the impact, there'll be less of a chance of breaking anything by using it. Breaker bars are not really a good idea IMO because it's aluminum we're dealing with. They get really tight in the housings and sometimes it can even be difficult with an impact.
But as everyone else has already said, it's very strange that the leak occurs when you release the pressure. An old seal that seals better with increased pressure? Stranger things have happened... |

The cover has been redesigned the new cover has a square gasket it requires the following parts to change over to the redesigned cover.
-redesigned cover p/n 12600022
-redesigned cover gasket p/n 12600020

As I said, they are pretty cheap and readily available. |

Not sure if the 03's had the new design my 02 still used the old one from the factory.
Below is a link to a picture I found the new one is the black one... the old one is the blue one. http://gallery.iametarq.com/cars/cad...p/IMG_6675.JPG |

Also, the impact trick worked! Pump is out!
And it wasn't the source of the leak. The small hose under the pump assembly was leaking. Oh well. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
