You mean the water pump cover gasket? I think that might be dealer only. I have one hanging on the wall. I think I paid $10 for it.

Re: Interesing Leak!!! 1998 Eldorado

Don't forget the water crossover gaskets- they can be a real PITA. More times than not it's the water pump shaft seal or the water pump seal, just like Ranger said.

I always use an impact to remove and install the water pumps, but very, VERY quick and gentle bursts. If you're careful with the impact, there'll be less of a chance of breaking anything by using it. Breaker bars are not really a good idea IMO because it's aluminum we're dealing with. They get really tight in the housings and sometimes it can even be difficult with an impact.

But as everyone else has already said, it's very strange that the leak occurs when you release the pressure. An old seal that seals better with increased pressure? Stranger things have happened...

If your water pump cover gasket (the eggplant shaped one) is a traditional round gasket then you have the old style water pump cover that are prone to leak. The cover has been redesigned the new cover has a square gasket it requires the following parts to change over to the redesigned cover.

-redesigned cover p/n 12600022
-redesigned cover gasket p/n 12600020
-redesigned thermostat gasket p/n 12574478

I'm not the OP, I kinda threadjacked his thread. I'm not having that particular issue.

There is nothing round or square, gasketwise, on my WP cover. Not sure what you mean... Is there a pic of the new version? Do you know if the 03's were the revised one?

Nah, I bought it because my '97 was seeping, but the seepage was so minute that I just never got around to replacing it. I'll probably just hang on to it just in case. As I said, they are pretty cheap and readily available.

The redesigned gasket also has little ribs in the gasket. To use this gasket the redesigned cover also has to be used. Not sure if the 03's had the new design my 02 still used the old one from the factory.

Below is a link to a picture I found the new one is the black one... the old one is the blue one.

Re: Interesting Leak!!! 1998 Eldorado

Aaaah. Mine is the blue one. Thanks for the pic.

Also, the impact trick worked! Pump is out!

And it wasn't the source of the leak. The small hose under the pump assembly was leaking. Oh well.
