Help pcv tube broken!!!

Hello Everyone, first of all I'm new to this site, and I just want to say it is awesome.

I had the codes 0171 and 0174 so I looked on here and a lot of folks said a good thing to check or replace would be the PCV valve. So i pulled the tube to check the valve and all of a sudden I'm holding the tube in my hand. The clamp is still stuck on the manifold and I can't get it off. I went to GM and they said I could either take off the intake manifold cover or the power steering pump to access this area. I am in desperate need of help. I'm an aircraft mechanic but this is my first time working on cars. What would be the course of action some of you would take if you were a novice like myself. The dealer said they can do it for $92. If I drove it to them without the tube on there (about 7miles) would it harm or hurt anything. PLEASE if someone could help me on this matter it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Re: Help pcv valve tube broken

Welcome to the site! Im a newbie on here myself when it comes to repairs but you'll find many very helpful and knowledgeable people here. I had a similar problem. Except my tube was only cracked. I used some electrical tape to fix the tube and all is well. But since your tube completely broke off, I'm not sure if tape would do the trick. Let's see what others have to say.

Re: Help pcv valve tube broken

To do a proper job - assuming that the PCV line has come off the tit in the intake manifold recess - you need to remove the intake manifold (no cover, it's all one piece). The whole thing takes 2 hours, it's not rocket science, and you might as well replace the connector plenum while you're at it: they crack at about 4 - 6 years old. (That might be your 0171/0174 codes, right there.) Read the threads on manifold and plenum removal. Use the search tab up in the blue bar.

FYI, your car does not have a PCV valve. It has a metered orifice which is integral with the tit on the rear cam cover. There is no maintenance or changing required, so you should have read up on the subject before pulling on stuff.......

Go on eBay and find a real Helm/GM Factory Service Manual. It will save you far more than this ^^^ will cost.

Re: Help pcv valve tube broken

thanks a lot Sub. the Tech @ GM said there is a special tool to remove the fuel lines on the fuel rail, Is this true? He did tell me that i may have to replace the (Pleneum?) connector as well once I took the manifold off. I have a Chilton manual but it isn't as thorough as I would like it to be.I suppose I would have to replace the gaskets as well huh? If possible can someone give me a list of things i might want buy to get the job done correct? Like I say I'm a newbie at fixing on cars but I'm definitely ready to learn. I noticed one of the first steps before pulling off the manifold is to release the fuel pressure. How is this done and what other tips can you give as far as R & R. Thank you guys a million......P.S would it hurt to drive it to pick up the parts for this......2Miles
