There was a study done on that not long ago and the beetle is definitely hands down a girl car. Mostly because it's cute and they don't know any better. | unless it is this beetle: http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/972558432.html

Good point Urbanski. There are many members of this site who own all kinds of different makes/models of cars in addition to their Caddy- but most of us have one thing in common, we're proud of our 'Lacs.
No- they're not perfect. Yes- they have some flaws and some common points of failure. But that's why we have tools and people who know how to use them (including so many knowledgeable/skilled DIYers).
I have found a solution to the HG/bolt pulling problem that will allow EVERY block to be re-used and it's relatively low-cost and a good, durable repair. Even where inserts wouldn't work the studs will. I have yet to find a block (besides cracked ones) that I cannot use.
Lebowski could have had the problem permanently fixed (by that I mean an estimated 8-10+years trouble free HGs) for a reasonable cost, and still would have had a car with value and style. Instead of complaining about it, get it fixed either with a quality insert or studs, and enjoy the Northstar power plant.
I could see trading it for an LS1 T/A or Camaro, a Vette, a Benz, a BMW, a Lexus, Audi, a Mustang, Lincoln, Mark VIII (yes Destroyer you ditched your Deville but you still bought a car with class) but not a Beetle. I am a GM guy through and through. If it's not made by GM, I don't plan on buying it. But even a Ford Crown Vic would have been a big step up from a Beetle. |

In engineering school they always taught us that the first step was to decide whether you're building a Volkswagen or a Cadillac. The analogy speaks for itslef. |

As a minimum you have to lower the cradle just to get the N* camshaft covers off. While you might be able to get the heads off too, doing a Timesert job on the motor in the car would require some physical flexibility that most of us old guys just don't have, not to mention some highly minaturized tools. Could it be done? Probably. But why would you want to? I'll put my money on the guy who drops the cradle being done first every day of the week.
As for door blowing Bugs and PTs I'll get to the next traffic light a little later and with far less law enforcement attention while I get a massage from my heated seats.

That PT is not stock. Caddys can be modified too- it just takes some determination to do it. I've raced a Neon SRT-4 with my Olds Aurora- we tied. Now think about a Caddy with an extra 50HP?! |
