Ha, your problems are just begining ,my wife traded in her Eldo For New beetle !!! Better buy the extended warranty !!!!!!! and schedule appointments ahead of time, Id recommend about every 4 weeks. If the warranty runs out you better be able to repair it your self because you can't afford this car. Current rates per hour at a vw dealer in Chicago are $129.00/hr and parts are unbelievable $100 for an iginition switch . Water pump only lasts 30k no more ,we needed a new cpu at 6k 3rd recall for a brake light switch replaced 2x before 23.00 a gal for anti freeze. Buy a caddy its waycheaper . |

And I think just about any car guy can agree, driving a stick can be quite enjoyable, when its in something fun to drive! Who wants to drive a beetle with a stick? Wait, who wants to drive a beetle at all? |

If you didn't like driving a two ton old mans car, why did you buy it? From what I read, you begged your wife for the car. Also, doing homework is important for anything, especially cars. I'm sure had you known about this problem, you would have ended up with 2000+ and been happy as a clam and wouldn't be driving a Beetle.
A friend of mine had one, and she said it was running her parents poor. She ended up trading for a Hyundai Santa Fe. |

But .... but ... you now own a chick's car!!
All kidding aside, I hope you enjoy your Beetle.
I do like their blue instrumentation lighting.
Just make sure you drive it till the wheels fall off.
Most non VW dealers turn away from Bug's on trade ...
they were a niche vehicle with very poor appeal, much like
a PT Cruiser.
Having said that, you got into the Bug for a pretty low price ...
it its only worth $3k on trade next year, you've only lost a few
thousand dollars at most.
Enjoy. |

I've owned many examples of both, although the intake manifold gasket/Dexcool combo was a recipe for disaster ... mine went at the usual 60k. (LeSabre).
There are plenty of decent motors out their. The VQ engine in my 98 Maxima should go to 300k without any issues ... and the 4.0L in my LS400 is likely stronger. Change the t-belt, w-pump,and tensioners, and these
motors will often outlive the rest of the car.
I drive old cars, and experience has taught me that regular maintenance
is far more important than pedigree or country of origin. |

Yup the N*, Buick 3.8, Olds 307/403 are the ones I've owned, I'm sure there are many others. 80's small block Chevs were great motors too- 305s had their wooden camshafts, and the rings/cylinders would wear out after 150,000 miles but they were still good motors. Cams/lifters are replaceable. The Vortec small blocks last darn near forever.
Old cars are the best way to save money for anyone who understands basic maintenance and doesn't mind turning a wrench on the odd weekend.

My 2000 ElDorado (convertible) gets 28-30 MPG at 75-80 miles per hour on the interstate. Sure it has a modest leak - no drops on the garage floor since i tightened up the pan bolts, but still some oil along the bottom the pan. I blast it wide open occasionally to keep it clean and keep the oil level filled. I has never overheated and has 115,000 miles on it. I'll miss it dearly next year while suffering in AF.
PS i used to have a 92 LeSabre, with the 3800. Took that car to 175,000 miles and it never burned or leaked oil. That engine was great!
My Fleetwood's gone though, I crashed it and it it was declared a total loss by the ins company. I don't have time to make a project rebild so i took the pittance and will get another when i get back next year. I'll be looking for a 95 or 96. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
