I was wondering last night what the difference is between the ETC and ESC models of the Eldorado. Aside from the output of the Northstar, which is apparently lower in HP but close to equal in torque, what (if any) are the other differences between the two models?
I have a 1998 ETC, which I bought for just under $5700 with just over 81K miles, and the other car I looked at was a 1997 ESC for $5300 with 99K. Both were in superb condition. I liked the color of the ETC (black) better than the ETC, which was a dark green shade, which helped contribute to my decision (as did the HP ), but I do sort of wonder what I might have missed out on.

Judging off the STS and SLS differences, I think besides the 25 extra horses in the ETC and torque differences, the ETC comes standard with wood grain interior, bose stereo, foglights, and has a more stiffer performance based suspension vs the ESC which has to add the additional trim packages and has a softer suspension. There may some other differences but those are the main ones. Try searching the forum im sure its been discussed hundreds of times. |

The ETC comes standard with Bose, and wood grain finish. You wont be able to tell the difference in the 25HP, plus the ESC is quicker of the line due to the cams and gear ratio. |

The ESC/ELC (Eldorado Sport/Luxury Coupe) series generally was rated at 275 hp with a final drive of 3.11:1. It will be a tad slower off the line but torque builds quickly, and will cruise at 200-300 rpm lower than the ETC, therefore slightly better gas mileage. The cam setup can be thought of as more of a "low rpm, high torque RV engine setup".
The ETC (Eldorado Touring Coupe) series generally has the 300 hp engine with a 3.71:1 final drive, so it is a tad quicker off the line, and power and torque build somewhat later than the ESC. The cam setup can be thought of as a more "performance/rpm" setup.
I say "generally" as regards horsepower ratings because, over the Northstar run, the SAE flywheel ratings for each model moved up and down a few HP.
You also need to know the speed limiter setting in your car: The driver's door tire sticker gives the ratings: S = 112 mph, H = 130, and W/Z = 154. The engine may be XXX hp, but if it is limited to 112 mph, you won't go any faster regardless of what you do........ |
