Thanks to Submariner409, for the "Butt Plug"
Today I bought my first (and last) "Butt Plug" yea, I know...Thanks to Submariner409 for the detailed instructions, and by the way, when I took off the silencer, it was not even connected to the air duct tube hole, damm oil change place! This is why we do it ourselves I guess, to get it right. So I would check that out if you have the oil changed some where and they try to check the air filter,(which will never be allowed to happen again on my SLS), they won't get it back on right and clamped at most places I bet. It leaves an open unfiltered air path to the engine... wouldn't it?
Based on what I read here, I went with the WIX brand, Air filter (I'm a recovering K&N spender) and really dig the look and the access to Trans.dip stick w/o the silencer.

Re: Thanks to Submariner409, for the "Butt Plug"
Thanks for the "Attaboy" ! If the air intake resonator had been completely disconnected from the 45 degree intake hose you would have had a very poor idle and possibly a few "lean" codes set. ANY air leak after that MAF totally screws up the A/F signals to the PCM, and a leak 2" in diameter will shut down the engine.
The only thing that resonator chamber does is damp the intake noise which so-called CAI installs magnify, giving the impression of more noise = more power. Don't mistake noise for power: there are several ways to slightly modify your present intake system in order to gain slight power throughout the engine rpm range.......all the tricks are in here and Northstar Performance. The cars already have a perfectly good CAI as built.....all it takes is a bit of work and piping change to "be the best you can be", Northstar-wise. All in here for the past few years.
Take a hard look at your existing airbox. Just outboard of the case, in front of the surge tank, is a good-sized hole into the driver's fenderwell. Using a long 3/4" hole drill or (more elegant) a Dremel tool, cut out the outside of the airbox to form a 2" x 3" hole near the fender hole. Make a foam gasket to tie the airbox to the fender hole. The existing MAF, piping, and TB connection are fine. You have now just doubled the available air volume to the filter panel and tract. BUT, you're still OK because the engine (280 c.i.) will never pull more than the new intake area can pass.
Or, you can get a bit more creative and pull the headlight unit, remove the airbox, and remove the OEM air tube into the bottom of the airbox, open the hole, make a flex pipe from the larger hole down to the lower grille area. This, and the above mod, creates a true CAI, unlike some aftermarket add-ons which really use a cutesy top hat filter to draw in hot engine compartment air.
Take a look at www.scangauge.com . Set up to monitor intake air temps, along with coolant, timing, and throttle opening. It will make a believer out of you.

Re: Thanks to Submariner409, for the "Butt Plug"
Good to hear that, when I lifted the silencer it seemed as though is was just sitting there on top without the plastic tie holding it, it was not done right, but good to know that no harm was done, as I didn't notice any issues. But now it's much better! I will get more into the other Air/mod latter, it's on the list... I have a lot of issues with my '91 sdv at the moment...PS my brother was a submariner & I did a few years on a tin can and a destroyer tender, good times.
If I could ask you another question? I was replacing all the lamps in the trunk lid the other day, left it open for 2 days while i was getting some sealer to finish it and didn't want to close the trunk lid, (I changed them without totaly removing the pannel because the wireing harness was nicley sealed and I didn't really want to redo it)...I thought that the batteery power shut off after 10 min. so I didn't worry about the battery...I went out to complete the job tonight, and it's dead. darn it,

I forget the name of the module that controls "battery saver", but my accessory lights, OnStar, radio, etc. go dead after 10 minutes of no "key - on".

Any hardware store plumbing section, 2" rubber pipe cap, comes w/ clamp $3.
Mine fit purrrfect. See Submariner409's post. Some owner's have used a spray paint can lid and cut it. This one I got is thick black rubber, looks like it was OEM.

I glued mine in place with some rubber cement and tossed the clamp. Looks and works great.

Re: Thanks to Submariner409, for the "Butt Plug"
The pipe cap that I got was only about an inch deep, so I didn't need to cut it as sub409 did, but I did use a small amont of gasket sealer and the clamp not too tight, just snugged.

Re: Thanks to Submariner409, for the "Butt Plug"
Hey, do we get extra casino cash if we win the coveted "thread of the month" title? and will it help pay for my ever growing caddy list of things to do? I don't want to have to resort to earning extra $ at the local YMCA!

Re: Thanks to Submariner409, for the "Butt Plug"
On my DHS I have clear access to the Trans dipstick... I shall study this more... has anyone removed said silencer on a Deville, or modded the intake piping? I don't even know where to start ... it appears there are differences. What should I search under? It appears the folks on the Deville forum aren't really into these kinds of mods... I'll check out the N* perf and hopefully will find a description that involves a Deville.

Re: Thanks to Submariner409, for the "Butt Plug"
That is very kind, (you know I was just kidding), but thanks, I wanted to become a supporter, and I will renew this, here is my problem, When I first signed up, If I remember back, I couldn't use my Yahoo email, so I tried my work e mail (State of Missouri) and it went thru. I went to buy Sal a drink the other day, and saw that the e mail of my paypal account needs to match the e mail for this site, so, if you can advise. I will get it right, I would rather not use that work e mail if poss. The site has been very helpful and I am learning to apprreciate the Caddy's more and more.
