You would be throwing money away. If you're looking at a so-called "cold air intake" understand that you already have a perfectly adequate one as built into the car. If you're looking for a higher flow panel filter than ACDelco, look at a WIX. Count the pleats.
There are a skrillion threads in here, Deville, and Northstar Performance about how to modify your existing airbox to increase intake area (which is already larger than the engine needs). Resist the urge to install an underhood hot air intake.
BTW, if you cave in and blow $$$ on a K&N, don't oil it much: you'll really screw up a $275 MAF with oil deposits.
Understand that car manufacturers (the engineers) aren't stupid: Cold Air Intakes have been used in nearly every car built for the last 20 years. They gain some high rpm horsepower and midrange fuel economy. Do you honestly think that Ford, GM, anybody would omit a cheap path to CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) so some aftermarket company could make a buck ?? |

For what it's worth, I did gain a mile or 2 per gallon according to my DIC when I installed a K&N drop in filter.
As always though, your mileage may vary. |

I have a 99 STS with a K&N and would like to switch it back to the original. I do not like the extra noise (I know some do) and it just looks odd in there too me. |

Than what ? Is the "8hp gain" across the power band or at redline ? How much time has your engine spent at redline in the past month ?? (Consider that an 8hp gain at the wheels on a chassis dyno would equate to something on the order of a 12 -15 hp gain at the flywheel........quite a bit for an air filter panel.)
Fill the car up with the recommended gasoline. Make no other changes except to drop in the filter of your choice. Reset the long term average DIC to 0. Take a 500 mile trip, under changing road conditions. Write down the DIC long term average fuel mileage and reset it to 0. For the return trip home, take the same route, use the same fuel, except use the OEM filter for your car, (in this case, ACDelco). Again, at the end of the trip, compare the two fuel mileages. Now you know how many mpg you gained or lost.
Do the same filter switch for four runs at the drag strip on a cool afternoon, with no other changes. Which two runs are faster ?? Unless there is a repeatable, significant difference, you have just learned something about hype and advertising claims.
I'm not being nasty. When you have spent as much money as I on snake oil and plain automotive crap, you'll understand why it pays to do some unbiased research before you spend your hard-earned bucks. |

I doubt if you removed the filter completely 8hp would be achived. Surely someone here has dynoed a K&N. I would say a 5hp gain would be a generous estimate. |

The only other modification I had was better flowing y-pipe & cats & muffs & rev chip. I gained 3hp. |

A Yamaha 3.0L motor that may be the most bullit proof motor ever put in a production car. The speedo was buried 140+ 8000 rpm.....The SHO's had many issues, I owned a bunch of them. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
