Happens at various distances/ time from starting & even sometimes when sitting in park idling at home. Won't restart for an hour. No idiot lights on before or after. Codes (all history) E68, IO33, 34, 37, 52, AO48 (current) 37, R33. Runs consistant 190 degrees. Horn doesn't work, Blower doesn't work, oil leak on driver side near filter. Recently replaced ECM, ICM, fuel pump, new battery. She has the 4.9 V8 motor. For 12 miles yesterday I was in heaven driving along with the roof open & some good music. Would love to fix this problem. I'm including all the data in case anthing hits a note with anyone I've read on here about crank position sensors but parts not listed for this model year & dealer parts say it doesn't have them. Advice very welcome. Thanks

Others have reported success in troubleshooting by pouring water on the ICM or placing an Ice Cube on the ICM when the no-start condition is present. The theory is that something electrically opens up in the ICM at hi temps. I haven't used the water/ice advise myself however (I don't like the idea of water in the distributor). Some auto parts stores will test the ICM, however, if the icm passes at the store it may not actually work in the car due to higher temps that are present in the car. |

As soon as the car stalls, turn the ignition on and pull codes - hopefully you can trap a current or history code that will lead you to the stalling problem. You are correct the 4.9 does not have crank position sensors. |

Cleared all codes, started & sat. Drove up & down driveway still running. Punched gas & she stalled. Only code E065 plus the refridgerant code which I knew about. Any clues? |

Punched gas & she stalled.
| What's the fuel pressure like? |

I'm thinking it should be ok as that doesn't regularly produce a stall. A new fuel pump was put in not so many miles ago. Most of the time she takes off fine like the thoroughbred she is! Will see if I can figure out how to check fuel pressure.
I'm wondering if there is anything emissions related that would create this one hour shutdown (you can set your watch by it to restart her). When I say she started & sat she started fine & sat over an hour with coolant temp consistant 190 degrees. Nice evening to sit & listen to music & read but would have enjoyed driving her more!
Alternator is a little noisy- sounds little like when you fan through the end of a deck of cards. No codes on that though & battery voltage stays around 13.5.
Also wondering if anything in driver area. ECM replaced as one day there was an electrical burning smell- you know the one that smells like dollar bills going up! which was when the info, climate control & mpg stopped showing. Replaced the ECM & that all works fine now. I could have sworn smoke seemed like it was coming from the steering column which seems like a long way away from the ECM. That's why I mention that the horn isn't working.
Thanks all for input- much appreciated- keep it coming

When the engine is in its no-start condition, check the fuel pressure as Ranger indicated. Additionally, hook up a timing light on 1 of the spark plugs and determine if the ignition is firing.
Another thing to check out....in your original post, you listed the ECM Data. ED01 is the TPS position in degrees. ED11 is the engine speed in rpm.
Your EDO1 was listed as "52" and ED11 is listed as 675...something doesn't seem correct here....a TPS position of 52 degrees indicates that the throttle was about 1/2 way open, yet the engine was only at 675 rpm. If you are certain that your foot was off the gas when you wrote down the ECM data and if you're certain that ED01 was "52" and not "5.2" (on my '93 Eldorado, the decimal point does show), then test the TPS.
To test, get back into the diagnostics and monitor ED01....with your foot off the gas, ED01 should be around 2-4 degrees. As you apply pressure to the gas pedal w/ your foot, ED01 should increase smoothly and in proportion to the distance you've moved the gas pedal. If the indicated angle jumps around and does not move smoothly with your foot movement, then the TPS may need replacement. This testing may be performed w/ the engine On or Off. Btw, I am not sure if a bad TPS would cause a total engine shutdown...or if it would just cause the engine to run like crap. |

No ECM Data,
IO33,IO34,IO37 all current
No ACP Data
No SIR Data
ECM?
I'm really suspicious now of something in steering column/ driver area. New ecm was working fine. Only change was I tilted steering wheel up! When I originally got that situation with no readings & horn was when there was smoke in that area. I'd be suprised if there's grease burning at this mileage in steering column. Any ideas on that. The stall is a sudden death, no splutter or lights. That happens in variable situations. Accelerating, deccelerating, idling in D, idling in P. |

No grease anymore under old one. Maybe this is part of the stall thing! Anyone know anything about that? |

So the stalling problem turned out to be that she needed a new fuel pump. Dash is working much better since replacing SIR computer. Very happy to be driving her again. Thanks for all the advice. I ended up taking her to my mechanics & it was great when they baulked because they couldn't access codes (I made a list of all the data when the dash worked the day before) to be able to say "can we do it the old fashioned way & look at air, fuel & fire! | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
