Rear Brake Proportion Valve Replacement

Remove this ad
My the drivers side rear brake proportion valve on my 96 Eldorado has started leaking. Just by looking at it the thing looks like it is almost impossible to get to. I'm considering not touching this repair and letting a shop deal with the headache of replacing this, but thought I'd see if anybody has any hints or tips before I either tackle this myself to have a shop do it. Thanks in advance for any help or information.

Re: Rear Brake Proportion Valve Replacement

Not sure which part you're referring to; I thought there was only one proportioning valve that would be near the master cylinder under the hood. In any event, unless you are pretty adept, brakes are often best left to the shop. I'll do pads and rotors but much past that goes to my brake guy.

Re: Rear Brake Proportion Valve Replacement

The service manual calls it a left rear proportioner valve. As far as brakes are concerned I normally only tackle pads and rotors and based on the location of this thing I am really leaning towards taking it in. I tried to get in there to tighten up the lines to see if that would stop the leak and found it extremely difficult to even get a wrench on the fitting.

Re: Rear Brake Proportion Valve Replacement

It's not that hard although when I did mine i had to change a length of the brake line with it because the flare nut was all rusted. Just buy the new one first and take it to Napa or some auto parts store. One side requires a different size flare nut on the brake line but you wont find it, instead look for a brake line adapter for that side.

Re: Rear Brake Proportion Valve Replacement

Bringing this thing up.... been looking for more info and so far very limited.. the dealer wants 200 bucks to fix it.. not bad but a new part should run less then 50 bucks.. what else to replace when in there.. i know it is way tight to replace.. thanks for the help..
