1994 seville sts not shifting

Thank you for the site!!!
I was recently given ( from brother) a 94 seville sts. Last week the fuel pump went bad and I had it replaced.
yesterday I was driving home and the car stopped shifting into the upper gears( 2 and drive) I was only able to go 10 -15 mph or the rpms would go real high. luckily i was 1/4 mile from home.
I checked the trans fluid and it WAS pretty low. I put fluid in and still no shifting. although, it did shift 1 time when first starting out-I think?.
I just went out and tried it again and still no shifting!!!.
My problem is I am disabled and have social security disability( not very much) as my only income.
with the $500 I paid for the fuel pump, filter etc... I have no more money to spend on the car..
I asked my uncle - who knows a little about cars and he said the tranny might not be ruined- I pray- he said it might be something simple, such as a modulator or loose vacumn line.
my question is : would anybody be able to give me ideas or areas to check that would not be too expensive. has anyone had this problem- what did you do?
I am getting sick thinking I put all my money into it last week and it may be dead.
where should I start . If I have to take it back to the mechanic what should i tell him to check.

Thank you, anthony

Re: 1994 seville sts not shifting

Theres a promlem these cars have with the shift solenoids. More than likeley its the solenoids. Check your codes. Make sure you check the trans fluid with the car in park and idleing.

Heres a thread on replacing shift solenoids. Do some searching in this forum. This happens alot.

http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...lenoid-qs.html (Transmission solenoid Q'S)

Exactly how low was the fluid? Was the fluid hot or cold. And where was it on the stick?

To check codes turn the key to the on position(not turning over the engine) and simultaneously press the off and warmer buttons on the climate control panel. and right down the codes.

Re: 1994 seville sts not shifting

it was hot- engine off on a slight grade( i know that's wrong but I was just trying to see if there was fluid in it )- I had an oil change last month and they are supposed to check it!!!
there was an inch of fluid on the dipstick ;it was below the cold marking and way below the hot. I will move it to a level surface and check it again.
Thanks

Re: 1994 seville sts not shifting

The 4T80E is a DRY sump transmission. There will be NO fluid on the dipstick with the engine off. The engine must be running, hot, in P to check the fluid. If you filled it with the engine OFF, it's overfilled right now.........use DEXRON-III or -VI.

The shift solenoids mentioned control 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. The solenoids are a (?) 50$ package and a couple of hundred labor at a Mom and Pop shop, twice as much at a GM dealer.

Re: 1994 seville sts not shifting

I just checked the level - it is full - not overfull.
I ran the engine for 10 mins. then checked it. I also tried driving it to see if a ghost mechanic fixed it last night. He did not- still not shifting!!!.
Is the solenoid most likely the cause- or could it also be something else?

Thanks,
anthony

Re: 1994 seville sts not shifting

There's quite a bit in here and Northstar Performance concerning transmission shift solenoid problems. You might try some Sunday evening homework....Please understand that my '02 may be somewhat different from your year.......there will be other people coming in with info throughout the evening.........just remove the wheat from the chaff.............

best of luck, Jim
