Question Help with steering wheel and airbag

Remove this ad
Ok so I must admit I have a tendency to jump right in and start tearing things apart before I have all the necessary info. This time I seem to have gotten in over my head. I have a '99 Eldorado ETC that needed a new turn signal assembly so I thought it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. I've got a knock-off version of a service manual in DVD form that has been partially helpful. I'm pretty darn sure I've got everything back in the way it should be but now I can't seem to figure out how to wire the airbag unit back onto the steering wheel. Obviously the yellow and black connectors are simple, and I know the red wire with the spring (horn contact?) goes into the hole on the steering wheel and into the ASM coil, but where does the black wire that is paired with the red one go?? I circled it in the picture. Is this just a ground between the airbag unit and the steering wheel? I have been bangin my head against the airbag because I'm sure the answer is simple but I can't figure it out for the life of me.
Also, could anyone who knows about this sort of thing maybe guess what the odds are that my airbag is going to explode when I turn on the car?? I've had everything disconnected including the battery the entire time but I'm not sure how easy it is to cause an airbag malfunction. I should have paid a mechanic to do this, but I'm hoping someone here can help and maybe I'll get lucky and save some money in the end. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get... even if your best advice is to stick it on a trailer and haul it to a pro.

Re: Help with steering wheel and airbag

I had the air bag out on my daughters '99 a few years ago, but my memory is failing me. I am pretty sure the black wire is a ground, but I don't recall where it goes. Someone with a '99 FSM or one of our resident techs will chime in.

It won't blow when you turn the car on.

Re: Help with steering wheel and airbag

Wait a minute… this is same as mine…97 STS and I did mine few months ago (well better put that one year ago).
I think I remember, that connector goes in one of the two holes used to extract the steering, is just a grounding of the steering wheel (correct me if I am wrong).
Don’t worry about blowing the air bag as long as you disconnected the battery (at least 15 minutes before unscrewing stuff). If you need to be extra safe wear an electrostatic bracing, and always remember keep at least 15 inches away from the airbag while working on it. When you will connect the battery you will be by the battery (i.e. away from the airbag) so even if something is wrong you are away.
You might have troubles getting the horn to work (I did), that spring is a PIA to arrange properly. If no worky, disconnect the battery, wait 15 minutes or so and then rearrange the horn (safety first).
Also make sure nobody opens the garage door exactly when you disconnect the airbag connector (I jumped out of the car when that happened to me in exactly the mentioned moment).

Re: Help with steering wheel and airbag

The wires shown are for the horn and not related to the air bag.

The one with the spring goes into one of the holes and makes contact with the slip ring. Simply push in and rotate 1/4 turn to secure.

The other simply plugs into a threaded hole.

Re: Help with steering wheel and airbag

4 pin connector = steering wheel controls and lights
Yellow cable = Airbag
Spring and clip wires = Horn
