Exclamation Radio plays same station even on different frequencies

Howdy,

I'm a mechanic in Chicago attempting to repair an El Dorado Radio/Antenna system. The original radio stopped working so I went to a junk yard, found a replacement and installed it. However, now the radio will only play one station, regardless of what frequency I put it on. Even stranger, if I entirely uninstall the radio, I can still hear that station playing over the speakers. I have reinstalled a brand new antenna, also from the junk yard, and have been pouring over the schematic of the electronics, to no avail. I have also replaced the amplifier. All the parts have been the exact model replacements of the originals. The CD player works just fine, speakers are ok. Chicago public radio AM comes thru on all stations, regardless of the frequency I set, even FM! Thank you kindly for any insight you can lend into my problem.

Best,

Gasman923

Are you really close near a radio broadcaster? Try a different location

Crown Vic is right in the ballpark: There are documented stories of people hearing radio stations in their head after having a metal dental filling replaced. Same principle as a WW-II GI foxhole crystal radio.

Re: Radio plays same station even on different frequencies

I saw an article written by an FCC engineer that was a compilation of all their weird experiences and investigations. One involved the rusty springs in a box springs was playing music. After they found it they went to fix it and the guy who owned it said to leave it alone. As long as he knew where the music was coming from it was kind of neat. It's very common for an audio amp to play music from a strong nearby station. Just about any non-linear impedance can serve as a detector.
