I have been considering a second Caddy purchase for some time. I have a 1988 DeVille - which I really like. I have always liked the 85 Eldorado models, but when I had a chance to buy, the ones I found were not in great condition. Now that I am not really looking for a Caddy for a second cruiser, I find a really nice 85 Eldorado. All the service records seem complete; the car has 115k miles. It is 500 miles from me, so I cannot test drive -can only go on photos and carfax and dealer discussion/service history (two-owner car).
I also found a 87 Olds 98 Regency which is a super nice local car with only 45k miles. It is a looker with a great 3800 engine. I test drove it, and it does not have the Caddy ride of my 88 DeVille but was a nice drive overall. It has clean interior and a brand new converted A/C.
The Eldorado has some real style and elegance that the Regency just does not have. But the Olds has some class to it and the great 3800.
I am afraid of the Eldorado mechanical quality/maintenance. I guess I keep thinking I have a great Deville -- why get another Caddy? Try something else.
But the Eldorado styling keeps in my mind.
What would you do in this situation? Are there cars I should consider? I would drive this car for local errands, on the weekends for longer trips, for cruising. I do really appreciate your advice.
Honestly, I'd hold off on both. The Regency is too old for me and I can't justify it as a "special" car so I could go and spend the money on it. The '85 Eldorado is a beautiful car, but you're walking on thin ice with that 4.1L, especially with 115k on it. The fact that you can't test drive it and the fact it's not a Biarritz are two more strikes against it.
