Quick question please

Remove this ad
Just a real quick question, if you please. 2002 Seville SLS, axel nut size. 30 mm, 34 mm, or 36 mm? I'm replacing a front hub assembly. Besides a hub puller, what else might I need? It was difficult to locate the faulty hub, front or rear, on the side that is loaded when the "roar" happens. But I figure it must be the wheel that is much warmer.

I think I should be able to locate this nut size info in the FSM, but I haven't been able to. Am I just missing something obvious?

Thanks.

Re: Quick question please

FSM assumes you have a full set of GM spec tools so its sometimes a little sketchy on details like that. I wouldn't even be surprised if it turns out to be SAE. That said, I wish I knew the answer for you

Re: Quick question please

Even with a full set of tools, why wouldn't it specify which one of this full set of tools to use?

I feel confident it's metric since I've seen some talk about wheel hubs in these forums that say so, but not size. And I found the following webpage that is specific about GM FWD:

http://www.mytoolstore.com/kd/kdbrak11.html

I have to do a front hub on my 95 Bonneville, too. On the pontiacbonnevilleclub.com site I found that it will require 34 mm. I guess I'll play with advanced search for a while and see if I can get lucky. Thanks for the response.

Re: Quick question please

For the record, I found this, which satisfies me:

These instructions came from a 2002 Buick Lesabre Limited, however they will work for numerous GM front wheel drive vehicles including:
Buick Lesabre, Park Avenue, Centruy, Regal, Riviera, Rendezvous
Cadillac Concours, Seville, Deville, Eldorado
Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo, Venture
Oldsmobile Aurora, Intrigue, Silhouette
Pontiac Aztec, Bonneville, Grand Prix, Montanna, Transport

8. Remove axle nut using 1 5/16″ or 34mm socket.

Re: Quick question please

Thanks for the info, guys. 34 mm it is.

BTW, my FSM says torque axel nut to 107 lb. ft., but mine is a 2002 SLS.

Re: Quick question please

GM esi (electronic service information) which has since outdated the use of the older manual still states for 02 or 03 95 ft lbs
its your call on what to do but id trust the GM database which was last updated in 05 over the manual printed in 02....

Re: Quick question please

I called it the axel nut, but, as your instructions show, it's actually the wheel drive shaft nut that my book says is 107, where yours said 118. Sorry about the confusion. Mine says 95 for the wheel bearing bolts, too.

I'm hoping the corrects spec will be included with the nut. It looks like a dealership-only item.

Re: Quick question please

No, the nut. I couldn't find one anywhere online. It's the same nut, same part number, for both cars. A $15 nut.

Re: Quick question please

I have never changed the axle nut - I have always re-used it and never had a problem. I guess it can't hurt to put a new one on, but that's up to you
