Knocking sound engine SLS 2000

I started my car this morning after it was parked for about 2 days. The engine started but emitted a hard knocking noise. I shut engine off. Restarted and knocking noise still the same. Thought what the heck and restarted again and this time slowly revved up engine. Knocking noise slowly disappeared and hasn't come back since. Drove about 400 miles since and has not knocked again. Temp etc is fine. Oil looks good. Any ideas what could have happened?

Knocking, as in: sledge hammer, or tapping, as in plastic mallet ???

If it sounded like lifters check the Technical Archives at the top left of this page and read up on "Full Throttle Acceleration".
