Hi All
My sweet mother just passed away and she was the proud owner of an 87 Seville with only 30,000 miles on the odo. It still looks as though it came from the showroom floor.
Due to her illness, she hadn't driven the car for over 3 years. It just sat in her garage. After replacing the battery, draining the old gas, and inspecting hoses, belts etc., the car started and performed flawlessly.
The problem is intermitent. The DIC will shut off. At the same time the readout on the climate control goes blank. The fuel and mileage data goes blank as does the speedo and the odo. It sometimes comes back on. It does not flicker, it just goes blank. The idiot lights are all working, but nothing digital is working.
The battery terminals are clean and all fuses seem to be fine.
Is this a corrosive condition(the car was always in a dry garage). I am in Pa.
Has anyone ever experienced this situation and is there a fix? My brother is thinking about keeping/selling the car and has an appointment for a state inspection tomorrow, but it won't pass without at least a mileage readout.
I'm sure there are some diehard 87 Seville owners(yes it has the original clean 4100), and I'd appreciate it if anybody could contribute anything.
I had a similar problem with intermitent dash going out, and DIC/climate control going out...but on mine they alternated between the 2 which was on or blank.
The problem was the Central Power Supply.
Replaced that and works like a charm. If you do a search here for Central Power Supply, you will find a couple threads that might help.
Before that, I thought it was a problem with the ECM and BCM not communicating properly (wiring harness problem between the two) but it was the CPS on mine.
I hope these two potential solutions point you in the right direction. I know how frustrating this can be.
I agree! Central power supply. Located just above throttle pedal once the lower dash cover is removed. Large silver box held in place by 2 10 mm nuts, loosen nuts, slide CPS out and down still connected to wiring. Slap!! the CPS with your palm, if display flickers replace CPS. Also wiggle wiring to it to see if its a loose connection.
CPS, my display no longer flickers, even though that was not the problem I was trouble shooting. The auto parts store will have the refurb listed as Power Supply Unit. Unless you go to the dealer. Sticker shock, ouch.
OK...I've replaced the CPS with a new one ($140.00 shipped). No change...No display. I've checked connections and wiggled about every wiring harness. Can't even get the display to flicker. In fact, it's not coming on at all anymore...
I know the car's not worth much, but my brother wants to keep it for sentimental reasons.
I said slap it and if it flickers, replace it. $140.00 could have diagnosed it!! Only thing left is the BCM (body control module) or the connections to it.
