'03 STS lurches forward when braking almost at a complete stop, maybe trans mount?

Remove this ad
I have an '03 STS, and I noticed while braking, the car lurches forward a mere second before coming to a complete stop. At first I thought maybe the trans wasn't downshifting at the right point, but now I think maybe a trans mount is on its way out. The car has 105k miles on it. I replaced the front mount (the one that typically goes) 20k ago. It sure feels totally different then when the front mount failed. I drive it like I stole it (actually, I usually have to steal it from the wife!) some I know I'm hard on things. Hopefully someone can shed some light.
Thanks!

To a point all my automatic cars do this from downshifting to first at around 5mph or so. Its only noticable when i try to notice it if that makes sense. Even does it on my 06 MCSS

The front mount is the only one that really ever goes bad.
The 2-1 shift can be noticeable if you are paying attention, if it is too strong you could have a trans issue or something.
How's the fluid?

Re: '03 STS lurches forward when braking almost at a complete stop, maybe trans mount

Usually the front mount can be felt most on certain acceleration loads.
If you are really tuned in to the sensations coming from the car you can feel it, get rolling and then juice it about 1/3 throttle, when they go you can feel the extra movement.
The best way to check it is visually on a lift.

Re: '03 STS lurches forward when braking almost at a complete stop, maybe trans mount

What would one notice if the mount was bad with the car on a lift? Can one tell just by looking at it (engine off) or would I need to rev the motor while looking at the mount? Are they difficult to change out or are they like most others ( loosen bolts, place a block of wood under the oil the pan and lift up with a floor jack to get the engine off the mount and change it out)

Thanks.

I also have an '03 STS and my car has never exhibited this problem. So, this is not a normal thing for that year/make/model.
