Engine dies when put into gear

my 84 eldorado will sometimes die when I put it into reverse. If I put it back in park and start it again, it works fine...any ideas? I know the tranny fluid is low and a little burnt....could that be it?

Sorry i don't know much about the northstars yet so i'm not sure what the northstars engine idle is suppose to be but if its low enough the trans could be putting enough load on it to cause it to stall or something is wrong with the torque converter. Maybe locking itself some how. Driving forwad should cause the stall to but i'm guessing that you normally back out of your driveway instead of forward. Got any codes ?

The '84 has a 4100 not a Northstar.
