Car died on highway

Remove this ad
Hello All -

I was driving on highway, doing about 70 mph, and someone wouldn't let me into their lane so I could exit. I jammed on accelerator to get by. As I was exiting, my car lost power and eventually sputtered out. When I try and start it, it idles really rough and dies. I managed to keep it running long enough to get it onto a tow truck's tongue and got her home, but it will sputter out if I don't give it any gas and runs rough when I do give it enough gas to run.

I just got the factory 1985 eldorado maintenance manual, but I can't figure out how to diagnose this bad boy. Herre are my thoughts:

-Timing chain slipped (I believe these guys have plastic teeth?)
-f'ed up my cam?
-something shorted out in electrical? Perhaps cracked sparkplug? I just had car smogged and one was cracked so was misfiring - perhaps another was on the way? it was night and I have work so havent had a chance to check plugs yet, but that was another thought.
-4-6-8 messed up cause I pushed her too hard

Any other suggestions/ methods of diagnosis would be very appreciated. Here is the specs on my car (cant remember if i put in signature):

1985 Cadillac Eldorado touring edition, HT4100, estimated 113000 miles (but engine seems to have been redone recently).

Thanks!

Re: Car died on highway

So I spoke with my mechanic and he said I probably blew off a vacuum hose somewhere. How does this sound?

Re: Car died on highway

Sounds feasable to me. That will certainly cause the problem you are describing.

Re: Car died on highway

I did not find any vacuum hoses off or anything. I ran the error codes as it is intermittently saying service soon. 30 - ISC control circuit; 53 - i forget, will look up when i get home; 63 - something about exceeding speed, I will look it up again. I'm not really sure what to do about the Idle speed control circuit - i have the factory repair manual, but it's diagnosis and repair steps are less than clear to me. I'm wondering if it is the 4-6-8 messed up. I am going to try resetting computer by taking battery off for a bit. Any suggestions would help!

Re: Car died on highway

I think 53 has to do with distributor circuit being messed up
