Unhappy 1995 STS serpentine belt replacement-easiest way???

Remove this ad
I just had an idler pully dismount from the bearing and now I have to re-install a new serpentine belt. There is not much room and I am having difficulties weaving thru the many pullys. Any help on the best way to route the belt???
Jeff

Re: 1995 STS serpentine belt replacement-easiest way???

The belt routing is usually under the hood on a sticker on the radiator cowl. Put a 1/2" breaker bar or ratchet into the tensioner and pull it back. Weave the belt carefully through, I usually start on the crankshaft pulley and work my way up and out. Its way easier if you have a 2nd person to crank the tensioner back while you seat the belt because there is not much slack to work with and holding the tensioner and getting the belt on by yourself can be a real beach.

Re: 1995 STS serpentine belt replacement-easiest way???

I did see the routing diagram on the cowl. I took your advise and worked my way up. Not too difficult. I was even able to pull the tension pulley and wrap the belt around the power steering pump last. Thanks!

Re: 1995 STS serpentine belt replacement-easiest way???

Get a length of copper pipe, bend a 90 and flatten about an inch or two in it at one end. Use the flattened end to manipulate the belt into place. This tip was posted on another thread about routing the belt through those hard to reach places. I'll be replacing the S belt on my 96 SLS very soon... I looked at it today and it's nearly split into two separate bands... ouch.

Re: 1995 STS serpentine belt replacement-easiest way???

"easiest" way involves jacking your pass front tire, remove it, remove inner splash guards, gives easy access to the crankshaft, A/C compressor, and idler pulleys, becomes a simple 1 man job and is very painless...

Re: 1995 STS serpentine belt replacement-easiest way???

There is def. a lot of good advice posted here for serpentine belt R&R. Replaced mine tonight after reading this thread. took about 40mins. I started with the 2 large pulleys at the bottom and then got it routed only by-passing the tensioner pulley. However, gravity kept pulling the belt off the lower pulley closest to the windshield (largest pulley). Tried using a prod, poking from the top to finesse the belt onto the lower large pulley, no dice. It pays to have long skinny arms here

Next I had my roommate pull the breaker bar on the tensioner while I laid under the car, pulled away some plastic, and then fitted the belt around the big pulley. He let go of the tensioner and the rest fell in line. The belt I had was cracked, but most of all it was noisy. I had spilled coolant all over it checking for a popped HG in July. ...It'd be great if someone can label the rest of the diagram and repost it
