Remove this ad
Hi Nooby here !!
Been lurking for a couple of weeks
I think I'm missing something so I thought a would post and hopefully the braintrust here could help
I bought my wife a (new to us car)
she has M.S. and was having problem getting in and out of her ol' Maxima
Saw this 2002 STS in a car lot with 49,000 mls on the clock
beautiful perfict fit drove nice start having problem after 2 weeks
stalling out/ bad milage 15-17 MPG/ would not start sometimes (will ask about this later ) I dont think this has anything to do with what the stalling problem is found code PO335
crankshaft sensors
The dealer (slimeball) wouldn't honor warrentee
(sorry for the spelling not the first time probably wont be the last)
I bought the sensors and installed myself
( I like to fix things that are broke and brake thing that are fixed)
Reset the codes
drove the car ran great for a few miles
Now the car is stalling out again speraticly
I read AJ's post about----"Relearn Crank Variance" ??
did i scew my self ??
I thought the ECM would do this on its own (reset the crank position sensor)
is this a dealer fix ??
Thanks for your help in advance " great forum " lots of info
just one more
is there access to a service manual here for my 2002 STS ??

heres a pic of our caddy

Re: 2002 STS dies speraticly while driving

You can still try the relearn at this point. From what I can tell mots cars will just adjust to the new sensors but some may need the relearn to help. Also, in regarsd to the MPG, do you do lots of highway driving or mostly city? I drive about 2 mile to work everyway and dont get much, if any driving at highway speeds. My mpg average stays around 15.5. If I get out on the highway I get 20-22 mpg at the time.

Honestly it sounds like you may have a fuel issue but I dont know much about so I would wait for others to chime in.

http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...acement-2.html (Northstar Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor replacement)

Bottom of the page. I didn't have to do it when I replaced mine so I dont know if it works or not. Worth a try I guess.

Re: 2002 STS dies speraticly while driving

Respect........Try this: Unscrew the two 13mm(?) rubber nuts on the engine beauty cover and lift the cover up and forward. Lotsa snakes in there. Look at the right rear of the engine from your point of view. Just to the right rear of the intake manifold is a round widget held in a bracket on the injector lines by a big hairpin clip, and there's a vacuum line with a rubber connector sticking out. The FPR(Fuel Pressure Regulator). Pull the rubber connector off the top and sniff and look for raw gas. If none, OK. If any, replace the FPR. While you're at it, blow into the removed vacuum line to make sure the throttlebody vacuum port is clear. Look at www.gmpartsdirect.com or www.gmotors.com. About $ 28. Comes with the necessary O-rings and will test your back's endurance while leaning over the engine.........

If you have $45 to spend, subscribe to www.alldatadiy.com for 3 years. An online manual, recall, TSB, diagram, specification, labor rate, everything service.

Re: 2002 STS dies speraticly while driving

thanks submairner for your reply I left it at the dealer it would not go they called me back and said ignition switch $400 (ouch!) I thought that waS A JOB i COULDN'T HANDLE BECAUSE OF THE SECURITY KEY ISsue (sorry) they said no i could have replaced it my self I've owned the car for 39 day and I'm hoping i can get a warrentee (Again sorry) I need this car to run My wife is driving my jag i built and shes not the most careful'st driver
I my self don't think it the ignition.
I think it has more to do with the anti theif computer (keeping my fingers crossed) if and when i get it back I will try the fuel reg trick you sudgested.
So in short your saying that The sts is not getting the proper fuel pressure ??
Do you know what the fuel pressure @ the rail should be ??
Thanks again for your response
I thought that nobody was reading my post because there has been so much posted about this subject I.E. cranck sensor it gets soooo redundent again please excuss my spelling (i guess i ate to many paint chips as a kid )
about the jag i've inclosed a picture just incase your intrested R.T.C.

Re: 2002 STS dies speraticly while driving

In the amount of time I've been here it seems to be an increasing trend toward ignition switches causing the "random stall feature" to activate. I think slowly the bad Mexican CKPs are getting swapped out, allowing the crappy ignition switches to statistically catch up. If your car had the bad CKPs its just as well you did them now anyway, even if the ignition was the real problem. I think Sub's post on checking the FPR was in reference to your poor gas mileage issue, a leaking FPR can be a poor mileage culprit.

Re: 2002 STS dies speraticly while driving

looks like a GM small-block with the old style ram's horn exhaust manifolds. I like the alternator belt adjuster, too. Whose dual plane manifold ?? Your radiator expansion tank w/copper piping ???

Nice to see a real engine in a car once in a while. Good job.

Re: 2002 STS dies speraticly while driving

Thanks Sub for your reply
This is my third conversion I robbed a drive trans out of a third gen Camaro every thing fit radiator, trans motor package

I made the recover tank from bits @ work I love those third gen XJ6 it makes a great car ! British engineering with the reliability and preformance of a cheby.
I used the adjuster from the XJ6 with a mig welder to make them work the AC fit great on the small block.
The down size is I have to have a custom driveline built $300 (ouch!) I made my owne motor and trans mounts after yrs of trial and error found a design that holds up to the torq
when you take out the jag lump and put in the cheby motivator you loose about 300lb off the front end the center balance becomes true and it feels more numble like a vette
I love that car with the indipendent suspention handles like it's on rails but there's no mastaking whats under the hood when you stab the loud peddle.
I Built it for my wife for her B day before we found out she has M.S. things change Thats one reason i bought the Caddy ez in and out

here's my other passion

If the dealer you bought it from wont honor the warranty; Then call the warranty company and find out what the Hell is going on.
And if you get nowhere with them...Im sure there are laws against that sort of thing in your area, and you should be able to find a # in the phone book to call about it.
Actually positive that a lawyer would be able to find a # to call about it for you.

OoPps, sorry. Did I miss read So you dont have a warranty yet ????
You did say maybe too many paint chips. Got me a bit confused. If you payed for warranty then you start there. Dont touch not yourself cause that will just throw that cash away.

If you have no warranty then is best to keep it on topic so as not to continue to confuse.

Ya know...paint chips and all LOL

Re: 2002 STS dies speraticly while driving

Thanks for the reply
well I bought it from a used car dealer and they do have a limited 90 day warrentee
but I'm uncerten what it covers
I live in washington state and we do have a lemon law but it is very week and only covers new cars
it's a law with no teeth!!
I did replaced the Crank sensor my self because I neede the car to run right now and after many calls to the dealers general maniger without any response I thought well for a few hundred buck if that what takes to get the car running I could do it and get it done i have complaned to the attorney general with less secesses
the other dealer which I took it to said it was $800 to fix the egnition and water pump housing which leaks ( again sorry for my spelling)
so hopefuly I will gt it back tomorow and will have toi sew to get some ogf my money back

Re: 2002 STS dies speraticly while driving

Thanks Cadillacboy
like your avitar two thumbs up! ( Ya cider house rules) sorry had to ad that
How do I get one ??
About the 2002 STS no word from the dealer about condition ??

The vette has been neglected of late I drive it about 4-5 times a year Don't now why ??
Maybe because it likes to be driven hard but thats scary on a 39 year old car.
I'm about three different car builds
away from tearing it a part peice by piece and doing it right (two other verts one a 1.0 liter turbo'd the other a twin cam monster)
my other chevy 1.0 liter turbo sprint

This is a buddys car 1993 geo vert 1.0 liter turbo (about 150HP ina 1600lb car)
not quiet as fast as the caddy or as cumfy but cheap fun 40 mpg cars

This time I wont to build something I'll drive not to show
not stock but my vision with updated suspension
The guy's on the vette enthusiast board think it wrong to put late model suspension in a low numbers car C3 vette
I dont hang out in the vette forum today not my kind of peeps

here's a picture just after i bought it the first time in 1990 I stipped all the 70'S who haw and most of the car was in boxes
put it together on a budget sold it then a few years later found it and bought it back
