Determining Options Through Vin #

If I posted the Vin Number of two vehicles I'm looking at, is there someone out there who can tell me what options are part of the vehicle? If so, here they are:

Go to the sticker under the spare tire cover and take a digital pic of the tag with a slew of 3 number/letter codes on it. That's the RPO (regular production option) list for that car. The explanation is at the top of the forum page "tech tips" under the sticky "RPO codes". While you're at it, look at the driver's door sticker for the tire speed rating, and that will give you the PCM top speed limiter setting.....ask later.....

What if one of the cars isn't available. I'm looking at it on Ebay. Is this the only way to determine the options?

I'll bet that only someone with access to the GM database can do that type (VIN) research.

Do you mean the link called "Cadillac Technical Archives"? I can't seem to find any link called tech tips.

Go down a couple of forum pages to "Cadillac Technical Discussion" and enter the "tech tips" page. The third or fourth sticky from the top is "RPO......"

Got it, thanks. If I were to find the RPO codes, how many would I expect to see? I'm trying to determine if it's reasonable to ask someone to write them down and give them to me over the phone. I suspect there are too many for this practicality purposes. Thanks again.

There will be quite a few. The RPO codes will list everything from color, trim, brakes, engine, trans, options etc. Probably will be 20 or 30 RPO codes.

If you know what options you are interested in you can narrow the search for someone who would write them down for you. I ran all of the RPO codes on my STS through my FSM and the only surprises were the seat lumbar massage and 150 amp alternator. Everything else was pretty obvious (Bose, sunroof, chrome wheels, etc.) You can work backwards through the list and ask them if it has specific RPO codes.

He's looking at cars in pictures and doesn't have the luxury of a FSM or the sticker to go by. To try to go backwards through thousands of tiny RPO codes, from the generic list in here, in order to find his particular package of online Christmas goodies is futility. Better to have the car sticker info.....

Exactly my point - what will you find out that's not already obvious? If you can get the sticker that is ideal. If there is an option that is a deal breaker then I'd find the RPO code and ask if it has it. Otherwise you get what you get. The lumbar massage was a bonus on my car but wouldn't have changed what I was willing to pay for it. So it comes down to how much you really need to know. Any reasonable seller will list the options that matter and any seller that doesn't is one you shouldn't buy from.

I think the 2003 STS that I'm buying has everything you can get including Nav, XM, and moonroof.

I work for GM. I usually run the VINs only for supporting members of this site but forgot to check that you were a supporting member before I posted. I do this pretty regularly for the CTS-V guys.
