[quote=cortewardy;1257998]Hello, Im new to cadillacforums.com..this is the only site with excellent detail, pictures, directions, and people willing to help that know Cadillacs!
Two things:
1. This guy needs to get an award for complimenting us before he even met us on forum. No one ever sucked up, er, complimented members so lavishly in the past.
2. Cortewarde, if no one helps you here, I will personally take them out back and ....
Thanks for your courteous approach to the forum. Good people here, great and helpful info. We do like to pick on each other; and it is done in good humor. I suspect that someone here is a good tranny man, and he will provide you with some hints, suggestions, etc.
Welcome aboard from all of us. |

Yea ok so its the clutch in the tranny..it makes sense i guess because thats what everyone on the forum is saying...as for the whining sound it has a sound similar to a bad bearing... but once my tranny finally stopped working wouldn't i hear like a thump or something...or could that whining noise be my sign of a failing transmission. Would anyone have a diagram of the clutch or where its located on the tranny? or at least could someone tell me if the clutch is bad wouldn't i see fragments in the oil from the oil pan?
ps. you guys have helped out a lot ..i wish i could have know about this forum before the tranny blew and when i first notice the whining sound.. |

I gather that we are all in agreement that your tranny has "shot craps". Yet no one seems to have said much about the broken motor mount(s). The strain/stress that is normally absorbed by those mounts is going somewhere. May not be "the cause", but certainly can contribute. The movement of the engine/trans puts strain on the remaining mounts- if a motor mount is broken, then the torque of the engine is transferred to the remaining mounts ant the transmission!
Now, getting the trans swapped for the price you mentioned is a STEAL, and frankly that SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME. Maybe this is a friend, and that price is a "favor"...?
Question- do you know what it takes to get to the trans? Moreover, does the person that quoted you that price know what is involved?
Look, I have a '92 STS. I had a sudden "trans failure" at just over 190,000 miles. My issue was easier to diagnose- the transmission fluid would stream out of the bell housing as soon as you started the car= bad seal. So, I found this site (and thanks again to ALL of the Members who helped me!) and proceeded to "study up" on the process... the dreaded removal of the "Power-Train Cradle". I don't see any reference to this in any of the previous posts as it seems you aren't looking to do this yourself, but I think it is worth mentioning. If you are going to have the car repaired, you might as well have a look at what is involved. There are quite a few things that you could have done/checked while the car is dis-assembled and things are SO EASY to get to- I call this "the Might-As-Wells"...

I don't claim to know too much about transmissions, nor am I sure what your problem is, but I do know that the clutches are deep in the trans and it needs to be removed and disassembled to get to them. |
