I belive that if the short bar is broken his gear indicator would stay in park even though he puts the shifter in drive sounds to me like the pump is shot there for not being able to get motion in any gears because the tranny cant produce the proper amount of line pressure but who knows I could be wrong. |

you can see where the cable was via the horseshoe looking line thats the bar that SHOULD move with the shifter to put it into gear
imho i think its the clutches inside the tranny though
in which case overhaul is more expensive than the 1100 quote |

also it causes the fluid to heat up and thereby sets a message TRANSMISSION HOT or something to that respect and the Tranny Life begins to decrease from 100% |

this is a picture of what i believe you are talking about..
The short metal bar with the plastic or rubber spring like thing sorta speak.. is what your saying should be moving right? well it is moving when i shift the gears..however as far as a cable moving i dont see one besides the cables for the throttle controller that you move to rev the engine.. |

Im leaning towards a clutch problem and thats inside the tranny right and equals new tranny?..I acutally can buy the same tranny used from a running 98 sts for 650 and get it installed for another 600..but im trying to rule out everything before i go spending money.. but your reaction to my $1100 quote was unbelievable so i figure that i should be happy that im only spending a thousand to replace the tranny i guess..i dont know if you read all of my post but i mentioned that before the tranny went out i could hear a whining vacumming kinda noise it was low pitched uppon accleration.. and when i got up on the engine like from a dead stop or 20 mph roll the car didnt seem to feel like a v8..it felt like it had 150 hp instead of 300hp..but the engine was reving like it was actually going faster or something..perhaps the tranny was slipping and cadillacs are so SMOOTH! that i didnt notice the slipping because this is my first cadi..so how would the clutches get messed up anyway would it have todo with my engine flopping around because of my busted motor mount? was it just a matter of time? |

1100 is good
welcome to the world of Cadillac man
to do head gaskets on the car costs roughly 3500-4k...
if you want a cheap and easy to maintain car, dump it now. |

I spent 10 min reading all your posts, you mentioned something about a winding sound coming from the transmission, that’s something bad, shouldn’t happen (forget about cable). Also you’ve mentioned something about lacking of power (but high revs) that means that your engine is spinning loosely. All these make me thing to the clutch (is gone). A speed bump should not damage the transmission (unless is smashing violently in to the oil pan).
1100 dollars for a transmission replacement is dirty cheap, practically is free.
Let me give you some figures:
$930 fuel pump, $280 one wheel speed sensor/bearing assembly, $90 brake pads, $120 fuel line, $250 tune up (and last three I did them myself), $550 water pump, $750 alternator, $550 upper struts mounts, and these are just some of the expenses (in less than two years). This week I will spend another grand for sway bar bushings and filler neck (yes just a pipe that costs $550 plus a $100 hose).
Add some $320 per month in gas (premium, hope you know) some $55 oil change every 2 months or so and you got an idea.
So unless you love Cadillac’s (like me) dump the car and by a Honda or some other Japanese crap. Is cheaper to maintain, but a looooooooot cheaper in the ride comfort and performances. Recently a friend give me a ride with his whatever Nissan. My car with all 4 flat tires will ride way better (is just another world).
I am sorry for your tranny problem, sometimes it happens… but like somebody else said, 1100 is very cheap almost unbelievable.
Another thing, these cars are designed to be driven harder, if your transmission failed at 100k it means that the car was owned by Billy Idol. |

My local dealership is only $250 for a new water pump. I had it changed in about an hour. $1000 for sway bar bushings and filler pipe. Jesus man, have you ever thought about buying your own parts from gmotors.com and getting them cheap? You could also change your own oil for $20 rather than $55.
If you lived anywhere near me, I would gladly be your mechanic |
