EVAP Purge Line

Remove this ad
I saw another post earlier this year where Frank T described these components and I know he would know how they should route.... the Helms does not show the routing....and I cannot find it anywhere... Had one guy said he had the diagram and he sent me one, but it does not make it happen..

The reason this line is unhooked is because I had to install an engine in this vehicle after another person had removed the original because of crack block. I finally got everything together (heck of a job) but I could not find where to hook the EVAP canister purge line....likely because I got the routing on the switch and solenoid wrong but I still don't know how to correct and I think it has to be fairly simple.... If I could just see one... If anyone knows where a good shot of the rear bank of a 4.6 (without cover) is I should be able to tell from that....

I don't know where the Canister purge line hooks up --- on my (4.6) the canister line is not connected... the vac sw has two ports for sure and a third that is a facsimilie I think...the small port at the base of the electric connector socket loops to the bottom port (where there is a tee) on the Solenoid and the tee then loops back to the larger port on the Switch making what appears to me to be a sensless loop??? then the upper port on the Solenoid connects to the manifold --- seemingly the vacuum sorce.... So where is the purge from the canister supposed to connect? -- the bottom port (where the tee is on mine) of the solenoid has "CAN" stamped vertically on it and I have to believe that is where the purge from the can should go...but how does the others route??? I have Helms and they simply do not show enough detail on this....

I am posting this pic (hard to see but if you know it you can tell) that shows how the routing is now (again I am sure it is wrong) but I need to know what to do to hook the purge line somewhere........

Re: EVAP Purge Line

Bingo: this is an old post by STS96 but you told me what I needed to know....Thank you!

I knew that the small port on the EVAP Switch off the electrical connection communicated with the electrical socket, but VENT! that is all it is...and mine had a line connecting it back to the Solenoid.... I knew that was a sensless loop...(should say I thought it was) since I haven't proved all this yet... but it looks right now....

Look at the picture and the line looping around to the right and going to the top of the EVAP Switch is the line that has to connect to the EVAP canister purge line coming from the canister.....I will let you all know when I prove it...

Thanks for being here and thank STS96 again....

Thanks STS96, I am much obliged to you.... cort.. cecate@pacbell.net

Re: EVAP Purge Line

Yeah, I am pretty sure that 90 degree elbow is a vent line and is open to atmosphere. There should be nothing connected to it.

Re: EVAP Purge Line

What amazes me is how difficult it is to find this type of info...??? I have the factory (Helms) manuals 2-book set and the diagrams in it leave a bit to be desired...actually the entire volume is difficult ---certainly not on par with the inferred or desired reputation of the vehicle......

On mine the (supposed) vent port is not an elbow but has/had a rubber ell attached and I see no reason why it needs to be there...This is a normally open valve so I have to assume it is open to the atmosphere and that just keeps it from sucking on the canister all the time (I guess it could pull gas from the tank eventually) when current is applied the valve closes and then the PCM would open the solenoid and the vacuum would evacuate the purge line into the manifold -- ?? best I can figuer... has to be a better way but I don't have time to find it.....ha.

Re: EVAP Purge Line

There appears to be an elbow or two in that picture. If I still had my '97, I could be of more help.

Re: EVAP Purge Line

I meant there was not a built in elbow....Yes, there is the tee and three elbows and the tee is actually an 'F' having the ell built into the one end. But I think the one ell (looks a little like a pipe [tobacco pipe]) in that one side is longer than the other.... I think the idea is to vent anything that may escape through that vent away from the engine cover but that is just a guess....
