trunk release(s) inop '98 STS

Dear all-
1998 STS
Trunk releases suddenly stopped working- neither the button next to fuel door or button on the remote work. Fuel door releases do work. What is likely the problem part and where is it?
Thanks
Doug

Sounds like the release solenoid on the trunk lid has gone toes up. Open it up and see if it twitches at all when somebody hits the button or you hit the remote. If it doesn't do anything, pull the connector and check for voltage to the solenoid when either button is pressed.

In the box under the rear seat there is a relay labeled TRK RLY.

Re: trunk release(s) inop '98 STS

It seems to be the trunk release solenoid- one of the wires going to it shows power when the remote button is pressed. Rock Auto lists one for a 92 STS for $35.89. AC Delco part # 16629762. When I enter year 1998 all they show is the wiring pigtail for a few $. Wonder if the earlier year cars use the same solenoid / latch? When I search at GM Parts online, I can't bring up that part.
Thanks so far
Doug

Where you measuring the voltage at the solenoid connector? If so, did you use the same connector as the ground for your voltmeter? Reason I ask is because of other owners reporting trunk lid lighting problems that were traced to faulty chassis ground terminations with the lid wire harness.

If you have the lid trim removed far enough to access the solenoid connector, the power will be on pin A (black with white tracer) and the ground will be on pin B (black). Also check continuity of the solenoid coil.

Solenoid failures are rare. I would eliminate everything else before I replaced one.

Re: trunk release(s) inop '98 STS

I have the same problem with my 1998 seville STS. When I check continuity to the trunk release solenoid, my ohmeter indicates an open circuit. My dilema is that when I measure voltage to the solenoid I get a reading of 12 volts all the time. I cannot see any switching of the voltage when the buttons are pushed. I changed out the control relay and nothing changed, the problem was still there. could the ground be switched to control the solenoid?

Ground switching is used frequently. I don't remember how that circuit is set up and my manuals are 50 miles away.

Re: trunk release(s) inop '98 STS

thanks for the reply. I haven't gotten back to working the problem because of other things. How do you remove the lock chamber for the solenoid?

Re: trunk release(s) inop '98 STS

probably was the valet switch and they told you it was a faulty ground near the e-brake pedal. Charge you anything?

Re: trunk release(s) inop '98 STS

I'm bringing back an old thread because I have the same problem on a 1999 Deville. I just did some trouble shooting, and some reading in the FSM. Here is the trouble-shooting section from the FSM:
Quote:
Rear Release Inoperative with Transmitter
---- ------- ----------- ---- -----------

1) Did you perform the Remote Keyless Entry System Check?

Yes -- Go to Step 2
No --- Go to Diagnostic System Check - Remote Keyless Entry

2) Inspect the rear compartment release function by using the
rear compartment release switch on the instrument panel.
Does the rear compartment release function properly?

Yes -- Go to Step 3
No --- Go to Rear Compartment Lid Release System Check
in Body Rear End

3) Is the rear compartment release function inoperative from
both transmitters?

Yes -- Go to Step 5
No --- Go to Step 4

4) Replace the transmitter. Refer to Transmitter Replacement.

5) Replace the remote function actuator (RFA) module.
My trunk release does NOT work from the remote, or from the dash. The fuel door DOES open from the remote and from the dash. Therefore, I am looking at "Rear Compartment Lid Release System Check in Body Rear End." Following is all the information I can find:

Quote:
Rear Compartment Lid Relase Operation

The lock release of the rear compartment lid allows the unlocking of the lid from the inside of the vehicle by a switch located in the passenger compartment or from the outside of the vehicle by the oval key.

The lock release of the rear compartment lid consists of an actuator and a single wire harness. The harness extends from the switch to the rear compartment lid. The harness connects to the release actuator mechanism.

Pressing the switch energizes the release actuator coil. The release pulls backward and unlatches the rear compartment lid lock. The lid then raises, allowing the manual raising of the lid to the full open position.

An internal circuit breaker protects the entire actuator assembly against overheating and internal shorts.

-------------------------------------------------

Rear Compartment Lid Release Circuit Description

Pressing the rear compartment lid release switch provides an input signal to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster sends a Class 2 serial data message to the body control module (PZM). The PZM grounds connector C6 of the rear compartment lid release solenoid through CKT 1344 (LT BLU) if the following conditions are present:

• The transaxle is in the PARK position.
• The valet lockout switch is closed.

Power is supplied through the following components to the now-grounded CKT 1344 (LT BLU):

• The RADIO/PHONE fuse
• CKT 40
• The coil of the rear compartment lid release relay

The relay coil energizes and closes the relay contacts.

Power is supplied from the CONVENIENCE fuse through the following components:

• CKT 2040 (ORN)
• The now-closed relay contacts
• CKT 56 (BLK/WHT)
• The rear compartment lid release solenoid

The solenoid energizes and the rear compartment lid latch assembly releases the rear compartment lid.
Sounds like I have to check for the LT BLU (light blue wire?) at the solenoid to go from non-grounded to grounded when I hit the remote to open the trunk lid.

Does this sound right?

Re: trunk release(s) inop '98 STS

Some Sevilles and Devilles have had problems with the wire harness which runs from the trunk solenoid and trunk lid lighting down through the left (driver's side) channel in the trunk hinge. One or more wires tends to chafe from opening/closing and either breaks or loses a ground.

Just another thought.......
