Yea I was scratching my head too. I mean as far as performance modifications are concerned... there isnt a whole hell of a lot you can do to the Northstar to begin with... its not an entirely mod friendly motor. So if youre talking about "hooking up" the motor... it doesnt really matter.
The regular Eldo has more low down torque, but less HP. The ETC has 290-300hp depending on year.
I think the ETC package just looks better and less cluttered on the outside.

The 95 ETC has 295 ft-lbf. torque at 4400 rpm and its 300 hp is generated at 6000 rpm. The base model will be slightly faster unless the ETC is able to utilize all of its 300 hp because the base has 300 ft-lbf. at 4000 rpm and 275 hp at 5750. So it looks like the base model is able to generate it's full power potential a bit faster than the ETC.
I'm certainly not an expert, so correct me if I'm wrong. |

The actual field performance is about the same between the two. The benefit of the LD8 engine (275 hp) is that you return much better fuel economy and get down-low grunt. The benefit of the L37 engine (300 hp) is that you'll pull away in the 1/4 mile and you get good high RPM power.
I've owned both and prefer the LD8 setup, the 275 hp. But I'm learning to like my current L37 setup in my STS as well. |

So would I be better off getting a low mileage 95 ETC and hooking that car up for performance? |

As far as downgraing to a 95 just because you can add a chip... that is up to you, but there were many refinements between 95 and 97 (interior and such) which would cause me to want to keep the 97 versus the small performance gain on the 95 OBD-I setup. thats just me. |

The '97 has a largely updated interior vs. '97 (though that's of course a subjective thing). The '97 does, however, have larger brakes, an improved front suspension, and some other refinements. If you're focused solely on speed, the '95 is probably your horse. But then again, if you're focused solely on speed, a Camaro is probably your horse. |

The 93-94 ETC had 295 hp and 290 tq. The 93-94 Eldorado had 270 hp and 295 tq.
The 95-02 ETC had 300 hp and 295 tq. The 95-02 Eldorado/ESC had 275 hp and 300 tq.
As long as you're looking at a '95 ETC vs. '97 ETC, the power and torque is the same. If you're talking about a '95 base Eldordao vs. a '97 ETC, yes, the '95 has 25 fewer horsepower (but more torque). |
