Exclamation Plastic Chunks In Oil

Remove this ad
Hello, I own a 1996 Cadillac STS with 70 000 on it. I decided to change the oil today and i found a bunch on plastic chunks in it with a bit of metal shards. Does anyone know what it is. Also when i first fire it up on a cold start it tings ALOT and it doesnt go away for around 2-3 mins and idling its even longer. If anyone knows it will be nicely appreciated.

Thanks Mike.

Re: Plastic Chunks In Oil

Are you sure they are plastic? I didn't think any internal parts were made of any plastic like material. Maybe they are just deposits that have broken free? I don't know what the tinging could be...

Re: Plastic Chunks In Oil

I think there are UHD shoes on the chain tighteners. They are tightened up by oil pressure. Bbob said they were just about indestructable.

Re: Plastic Chunks In Oil

I was going to suggest the timing chain guides/tensioners. If one of the plastic chain guides physically broke (anything is fatiguable), you would probably see that in the oil, and the timing chain might rattle for a while on startup. This is a very common problem on some older Nissan 4-cylinder engines (KA24E), and seldom causes any real harm. But I don't know the reprocussions of a damaged timing chain guide or tensioner, if that's what it is, on a Northstar engine.

Re: Plastic Chunks In Oil

A timing chain with too much slack can jump teeth.......THAT'S BAD! Nothing should be in the pan except oil. A broken guide rail is eventually going to cause more harm than good...well it's not going to do any good for that matter. I'd eventually look into it a little more closely just to be sure.
