Inflatable Restraint trouble

Remove this ad
I am starting to try to fix all the little problems in my 92 STS. The washer fluid leak was easy - the hose was disconnected and needed some super glue to keep it connected...

The first thing is the air bag has an issue. The Infl. Rest. light is on constant and I am getting these trouble codes:
I021 History
I026 Current
I034 History
I034 History
I061 History

I am not sure where to even start as I have never worked on these systems before.

Re: Inflatable Restraint trouble

Those "I0" codes are related to the Instrument Panel Cluster ("IPC"). Supplemental Inflatable Restraint codes will begin with "R0." I suggest you check the SIR fuse first then go from there. I have a '94 GM factory Service Manual and can only find I034 code, which is 'Loss Of PCM Data Communication.' I believe your '92 will have OBD-I codes. If I were you I would check battery cables for corrosion. First remove the negative cable and then positive. If you have a double positive cable connection you should take it apart and look under the red insulation for corrosion. Clean the connection to the battery, etc. Wal-Mart sells a corrosion cleaner in a spray can. I don't know that the other codes are. Did you read them correctly?

Re: Inflatable Restraint trouble

The terminals were all cleaned up when the new battery was put in 6 months ago, as well as all the surrounding connections.

Yes, I read the codes correctly. But I did not type them correctly...... They were supposed to have R0 not I0 in front of them. It was a long day....

Quote:
R021 ......Driver Initiator Circuit Resistance High
Check the yellow two-way SIR connector at the base of the steering column. If there is a poor connection RO21 code will set. This code can also indicate a defective SIR coil and/or inflatable module. (See GM factory 1994 Service Manual, pg. 9J-40)

Quote:
R026 ......Driver Initiator Circuit Open
This code will only set if there is an improper connection of the two-way SIR connector at the base of the steering column or two-way yellow connector at the top of the steering column, or an open SIR coil assembly or an open driver inflator module. (See GM factory 1994 Service Manual, pg. 9J-56)

Quote:
R034 ......Dual Pole Arming Sensor Ignition Feed Open
An intermittent condition is likely to be caused by an improper connection at dual pole arming sensor terminal "A" or "D" and "F," improper connection at the dual pole arming sensor, open "Driver Source Sense" circuit and open "Passenger Source Sense" circuit, or a malfunctioning dual pole arming sensor. (See GM factory 1994 Service Manual, pg. 9J-62)

Quote:
R061 ......SIR Indicator Circuit Failure
This code will set when: "Ignition 1" is above a specified value and the output state at the "SIR Indicator" terminal "B1" does not match the commanded state of the primary lamp driver for 400 milliseconds. This test is run every 100 milliseconds "Continuous Monitoring" tests. (See GM factory 1994 Service Manual, pg. 9J-86)

Re: Inflatable Restraint trouble

Thanks for the information! It sounds like I must have either a bad connection or a bad air bag module. I will have to take it apart this weekend and see if I can find the problem...
