Ranger is right, and it is not uncommon.
It is worse on the trucks.
What typically happens is that the pump pulls too much current because of age or a bad filter. This causes the wires to overheat and it can melt the insulation off.
I have seen them melt directly to eachother, power and ground.
They usually come in blowing fuel pump fuses when they are like that.
As Ranger said, the air:fuel ratio is usually way too far out of range for ignition. Some older Chryslers were really bad about it.
You have to have fuel and oxygen for it to ignite. Don't freak out, you were never in any real danger. Good thing you got it fixed though or you would have been in danger of walking somewhere.
