1997 Deville stock Used PCM swap

First off, I just discovered this portion of the forum and tried to find a sticky or previous thread to cover my question. I am totally new to the PCM portion of these cars.

I am trying to help out someone with a base 1997 Deville. It has a strange code that translates to an unstable PCM (I can post code number and more info when I get my hands on car again) The trans will not upshift. This just started all at once. I know this car has the corrosion in fuse panel condition and I need to double check the vital fuses like ESC.

My big question is if I try to change the PCM from an almost identical car, year, Code Y motor AND the factory identical option code radio, (while battery is still unhooked) am I gonna be safe or is a Tech 2 required either way? I have access to a Tech 2 but would have to get the car to the friends shop to use it. I have VERY basic experience with Tech 2 and can unlock radios and program remotes in these cars but never tried to "flash" a vin into a PCM.

Is there a shortcut, even if temporary? Or this car simply is not going to run again if I change PCM until a Tech 2 is hooked up to it?

You can pull both VIN's on TIS2Web and see if the OS's are the same. If they are putting in the other PCM should be just fine. Not sure how Theftlock will handle it. You will very likely need to do security relearn again so plan on 30-40 min of that procedure.
