    Edmunds Insideline News
WASHINGTON, D.C. Cadillac is stepping up its performance game, with plans for ultratuner versions of the CTS-V, STS-V and XLR-V, as well as the possibility of a new "Super V" lineup.

Cadillac product director John Howell told Inside Line the company is already feeling out the market for such products. No timetable has been set for when the beefed-up models would go into production, but Howell confirmed what has been widely rumored for some time that Cadillac does not want to be left in the dust by such competitors as Mercedes-Benz or even its domestic rival Ford.

"We are considering tuner versions of the Vs and working with an outside company, like Mercedes does with Brabus or Ford does with Saleen," Howell told IL at the launch of the 2007 Cadillac Escalade and the XLR-V and STS-V here on Tuesday. "We need to look at it. We don't want to be left out."

Cadillac has not chosen a tuning house yet, but Howell said he would be inclined to select a "more European-oriented" company. "We don't want too much of a muscle-car image," he said. "Brabus is a possibility. McLaren is a possibility, as well as Alpina, Lorinser and Dinan. We want more refinement oriented, as opposed to racing oriented.

"Hot interiors would need to be a big part of it," Howell said. "And we could probably go to 20s [20-inch wheels and tires]."

Howell said, "Super Vs are under consideration, too. These would be models with some increase in power. They would take the bar higher in terms of handling and wheel and tire size."

He would not specify what kind of engine would go into the Super V lineup, but noted that the GM brand has "played with 12 cylinders in its show cars."

What this means to you: Cadillac wants to play with the really big boys, in terms of power and sophistication.

you know... as great as that would be for the return of them... i think it is best that they stay in retirement. i just cant see them ever coming back and if so, i just dont think they could do them justice. but i do think that Cadillac is saving them for a rainy day. i mean the last gen Eldo was one of the best looking... if not the best (well besides the 50s, i dont think they will ever be beat). and the last gen Fleetwood was the greatest (imo) of all and was called the Cadillac of Cadillac's for a reason. if they came back with fender skirts and coupes that didnt cost 77-100k it would be great but i just dont see it fitting with the Cadillac image as of current.

I'd prefer a super V to a tuning house version. Especially with an XV12 northstar. Oh yeah.

    I agree with the above....
and will add that 20inch wheels serve no purpose on performance oriented cars. Wider wheels are what help get the power to the pavement. 20inch just seems to "pimp my ride" and not "refined".

Cadillac should send a few V's my way. CTS-V Evoluzione, mmm, sexy sounding. The things we (that is, EE. I'm not just crazy) could do to the V cars...

Just saw the new CTS-V in my local cadillac dealership. This baby is rear wheel drive, large brembo brakes all around and V8 Northstar Supercharged rated at 400 HP. 28 hwy MPG! Tried to fanagle a test drive but no cigar. Not even the salesmen were allowed to drive the damned thing. Gotta apply for credit first and get approved prior to test drive. Price tag of $52K was not too bad at all. Haven't found anyone with and STS-V. Interior looks like standard CTS (dissappointing).

Yea the CTS-V is a real nice car, but you got your specs wrong.

THe CTS-V has the LS6 C5 Vette engine and is not supercharged.

The STS-V has the 4.4 supercharged Northstar.

Actually you're all wrong. The CTS-V has the LS2 from the C6 Corvette. The LS6 was from the 2003 -2005 Z06 only and was in the old 2004/2005 model CTS-V's not the 2006. The 4.4 L Supercharged Northstar makes 469 hp, not 400.
