    Car and Driver V3 prediction

Just received April's C&D with the list of 25 cars worth waiting for.
    Here's what it says

What it is: The eagerly awaited bazooka version of the third generation Cadillac CTS, designed to fight for America's honor against it's European competitors.
Unfortunately, this time around there won't be station wagon or coupe - or manual option. That's a crime, but the automatic sedan is what sells.

Why it matters: The first two generations of this velvet Vett have given Cadillac credibility among enthusiasts. The next generation will sand down the few rough edges of it's predecessors. The CTS V is a halo car for the brand and GM as a whole.

Platform: Broadly speaking, the CTS V will use the ATS/CTS "alpha" architecture, but with more aluminum onboard.

Powertrain: Power will probably come from a supercharged V-8, most likely likely the 6.2 liter LT4 from the new Corvette ZO6. It will make at least 600 horsepower and send the squawk to the rear tires through GM's new eight-speed automatic.

Competition: Audi S6/S7/RS7, BMW M5/M6 Gran Coupe, Jaguar XFR, Mercedes Benz E63 AMG.

What might go wrong: The lack of coupe and wagon variants may put off the hard core. And the 420 HP Vsport could make the CTS V a harder sell.

Estimated arrival and price: Mid-2015 as a 2016 model, at prices starting around $75,000.

Most of this we already knew or expected.
I still believe a "properly equipped" CTS V will exceed 80k.

Thanks for sharing. The absence of a wagon model will definitely put me off.

The absence of a clutch pedal will make it suck hind teat in the press. Without the press drool it won't have the credibility to offset the brand's prestige deficiency.

And the Germans have multiple body styles.

    Hope the V is cheap.

I agree, without a manual option it may quickly be overshadowed and left behind by other (European) car makers.

Even the Europeans are moving towards exclusive automatic offerings. While I don't like it, I do not believe the lack of manual will have much effect provided the auto offers performance comparable to the European dual clutch autos.

It's early. Don't count out that new manual 7-speed yet.

As much as I love manual transmissions (I've only had 1 auto out of like 10 cars) I don't think I want to row through 7 or 8 gears. I realize that 7th gear would prob be used mostly on Hwy. I think a 6 speed is perfect, even though a 7th gear in the V2 would net a better MPG average. Still a 7sp manual sounds like too much.

A 7 speed manual is not too much. It is exactly like the 6-speed when driving enthusiastically, which is to say you're not using all the gears to have fun.

    Read a C7 Corvette review.

I think I'd prefer Porches' 7 speed shift pattern to GM's though.

Manual is a must. I dont think GM will make that mistake unless the auto is a TRUE DCT.

I would be put off without a manual... especially if the auto wasn't a DCT. True shame there if GM misses that on a car made for enthusiasts. The only way they put out a non DCT auto only car, that doesn't piss off their buyers, and beats down the Germans without a DCT, is if they surprise us with all wheel drive.

BTW the coupe didn't come out until 2 years after the sedan. So I wouldn't be surprised if they came out with just a sedan. And then the next year offered wagons and/or coupe versions.

Re: Car and Driver V3 prediction

I just read that the CTS-V was going to get the new twin turbo LT4 that is going in the next Corvette ZR1. The supercharged Z06 mill was slated to go into the ATS-V+ or super ATS-V whatever you want to call it, which is going to be a model above the twin turbo 6 ATS-V.
