Post Cadillac News: Cadillac diesel back on the table

Filed under: LA Auto Show, Europe, Cadillac, Diesel

How would you feel about a Cadillac with a diesel engine? Those of you in America shouldn't bother answering that question, however - it's strictly for the Europeans. At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Cadillac's VP of marketing said that a diesel is "under consideration for vehicles sold outside the United States," with its U.S. chances going only so far as "a potential hedge."

When committing to the best fight against its rivals overseas, Cadillac's rep said, "if that means making the right powertrain choices, then those are the choices we will have to make." No mention was made of Opel's diesels or whether General Motors would choose to develop something new, but the German subsidiary has done well with oil-burners in the Insignia, and a trial of diesels in Caddys could help use up the allotment that Saab won't necessarily be needing.Cadillac diesel back on the table originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 Nov 2011 08:59:00 EST. For Europe it may be viable. Here in the US, way too many remember the 5.7 diesel disaster of the late 70s, with crankshafts going through oil pans, and the like.

Which is absolutely ridiculous... but unfortunately you had no other diesel experience than that in the US. Although VW, BMW and MB Diesels are gaining some momentum in the US. Diesels are the ultimum cruising engines and the current bi-turbo V6 diesels are mighty powerful and still quiet as well.

Only a V6 TD will bring me back to Cadillac. I hope they will hit it right this time. A sub-300hp V6 Diesel will not bring it anymore in the segment of the CTS, SRX and XTS against the +300hp V6 TDs from BMW, MB, Audi, etc. Even Infinity introduced their 3.0 V6 TD in the complete line-up in the year after their European debut.

    Here's hoping...

I guess it will be based on this engine:

    VM Motori A 630 DOHC
    Engine A 630 DOHC
    Displacement 2987 cc
    Cylinders 6 in 60 degree V
    Valves 24
Injection Common rail piezo 2000 bar
    Max power 184 kW/4000 rpm
    Torque 550 Nm/2000 rpm
    Weight 220 kg
    Emissions EURO 5

It lost 20kg on its initial design and gained an extra 50Nm in torque (but at 2000 rpm in stead of 1800).
Now it needs an extra turbo to boost it beyond 300hp.

The 5.7 was a nightmare but with the massive advances and low emissions makes me want a diesel. Look at the Mercedes Benz S-class Bluetec. It gets much better economy with the diesel
