DVD+-RW Sony
16x DVD
40x CD

Samsung 500 GB HD
500 gig
7200 RPM
16 Mb cache
3.0 Gb/sec.

Not sure if I just want to go with a large HD or a couple small 10,000 rpm ones in a RAID 0 array... any opinions on that? (would love a RAID 0+1 setup, but the budget doesn't allow for that many drives at the moment; And I would rather have some of the other toys in there than pull back to afford the drives).

Just one 8800GTX for now, but plan on expanding to an SLI setup in the near future (maybe once the cards see their first price drop).
Same thing with the ultra-expensive Corsair RAM... I can get by with 2 Gb, but will grab another matching set once the price drops...

Re: New computer build! Whee!

Well if you have the cash that's one hell of a box.

The only thing I would look at is PC Power and Cooling for the PSU. Sometimes they're not extremely fancy BUT in every test shown they're the most accurate and consistent with voltages. There 0 fluctuation at all times, even under heavy load.

I'm running the TurboCool SLI

Other than that, enjoy this thing

Re: New computer build! Whee!

Good god, even being an ATI and AMD guy, that's one hell of a rig.

In terms of storage, when I built my rig last fall, I went with 3 250GB SATA2 drives in a RAID 5 array.

Vista Ultimate 64

I know that's not going to be a popular choice (bashing vista is the latest internet trend), but I've read up on the work-arounds for the few known compatibility issues and don't think I'll have a problem.

In fact, most problems I see out there are from people putting it on computers that can't handle it. I want a true 64 bit operating system with access to DirectX 10.

If worse comes to worse though, I can always load up a copy of XP Pro until Vista SP1 releases.

Re: New computer build! Whee!

nice set up....the case is the only thing I absolutely detest but thats coming from a guy whos puts comps in everything but a computer case....
the memory is nice as long as its matched COrsair will sell you unmatched I would choose the dominator 2048 matched the video card is a good choice but I like the Quadro FX5500 but then again thats a whole hell of a lot more money.
What type of monitor are you running it on....I would choose a dual or even triple monitor set up just for the sheer joy of it....I am really itching to make a flight sim computer with a triple set up to simulate the look of a cockpit
Nice choices though Goth....when you get it done we'll have to see some benchmarking.....
