I found this extremely interesting since I have a 3 year old daughter. Sometimes we can't wait for them to get big enough to use a easier car seat, but now I can tell you we will think through that descision more.

Vehicle restraint systems are usually designed for adults or humans of a certain size and to work under certain situation and conditions. If the person being restrained is larger or smaller and/or falls outside of those conditions then unusual steps have to be employed to help ensure greater safety. Nothing is ever a 100% chance of working.

It's sad they lost their son, maybe others can learn from it if they're not already aware.

Damn. You really think about it, and the nuissance now is nothing compared to what could happen.
