Check this article from AOL News; as of 08 Data recorders will be mandatory in all new cars produced with the possiblity of ticketing without even being stopped by police. Think it's crazy-- apparently the rental companied have already started!!!!

As you can see in the article, GM has been on the bandwagon since 96. I feel like this could be like the next Catalitic converters when introduced in the 70's (I think Caddy put Cats on in 75; I only know this because my father had a 74 Coupe Deville Show car and from what I remember the 76 was a dog from the primitive Cat design.) It's one thing if the government wants to tap my phone, it's a whole nother issue if I can't 'move with the flow of traffic" even if it's with air traffic!!!

What an irresponsible and inflammatory piece of writing. Notice how every sentence starts with words like "they could do..." or "in theory...".

EDRs record about 10 seconds at a time, erasing over the previous data as it goes. If the airbags deploy, it saves the last data. If I get plowed by some speeding maniac I want his EDR data used in court against him. If my ABS fails to stop me while I'm traveling at a safe speed, I would also like this data to be available to allow for a defective product lawsuit.

The Orwellian vision of a NORAD style computer room monitoring the speed of everyone on the road in real-time is ridiculous. Fear of the Government is the easiest thing for a sensationalist writer to tap into to make a story seem more important than it is.

I think it's only proper to test this in rental cars first,rentals have taught me so much.
1.You can stop a vehicle by putting it in reverse or park(lots of fun)
2.Power braking!
3.Power braking,needed to be listed twice!!
4.Front wheel drive cars can do donuts in reverse!
5.Less weight=more air(everytime)
6.Perfected the (Rockford)in a rental!!!!
7.Hand brakes kick fu%^%(*ass!!!

As I see it,all these recommended activities will still be available with the black box.

I knew I was getting married again when I took my bride (Mrs. Wheel) to our favorite place on the planet for drunken roller coaster bashing - Magic Mountain. As soon as we pulled the rental car off the airport lot - she says "Let's drop shift this bitch and see what she can do!".

Love at first bite.

The Intrepid handled the weekend well. I feel sorry for whoever purchased that car

Neutral drops ARE great!!

One of the funniest things I have ever seen was when my friend pulled the emergency brake on his front wheel drive rental car and drove down the street with the rear tires locked up. I was in tears laughing.

Then, the next day, I doubled over with laughter when I was told that a cop pulled him over and inquired, "Have you been smoking the tires?"

"Umm, no sir...."

Meanwhile the rear of the car REAKS of burnt rubber...
