A pretty dumb article overall. Sensationalism without any common sense. Think about it: Your EDR has to be tied into some kind of transmitter (cellular? --they don't say) that not only has to give a precise location (either through an on-board GPS system or cellular triangulation) and be monitored by whom? The technology is available, but don't plan on "Big Brother" being that pervasive anytime soon. Most cars already have EDRs. After an accident, this is one of the first things they can download to verify your story. Paranoia will destroy ya!

Honestly some of us should be grateful that they collect crash data when air bags are deployed. It helps them to make the systems operate better.
Crashing cars under controlled conditions can't give you all the information you need to improve these systems.
