Car for $600

Remove this ad
Hi all (been away for a while)

I need some help for a fellow forum memebr elsewhere. They plan to go accross America covering 5,000 or so miles, and need a car to do it in, 2-4 memebers so four seats essential, they only have $600 or so to spend, so recommendations would be good!

Thanks

Re: Car for $600

Jeez dude, there isn't much I would drive around the country for $600... maybe somewhere there's an old Buick Electra or something, but most of the stuff you're gonna find for $600 is utter shit.

Re: Car for $600

Anything you find for 600 is gonna need at least 1000 worth of work before itll drive around the country.

Re: Car for $600

Wow, I thought you died or joined a cult.

Get a Corolla or a late 90s Chevy Nova (its basically a Corolla). Toyotas are a little less annoying to work on than Hondas. An old Caprice (NOT DIESEL!) might be okay.

Re: Car for $600

How about on the backs of 4 Brooklyn whores? You'll probably get as far as any $600 car and you'll have more fun.

Re: Car for $600

Tall order dude....why not rent a car?
I think you should be able to get a deal for $150/week.

You gotta register the car, insure it, etc etc...I think it'll be easier just to rent.

SOunds like its gonna be a hell of an adventure.

Sounds adventurous!
Good luck finding a $600 car that could haul 4 for 5000 miles! And let them write a book afterwards

Re: Car for $600

THey can't rent a car unfortunately, all passengers under 25 - $25 a day surcharge. They have a Perminant address in San Fran, so registration and insurance isnt a problem in that respect, it's still going to be cheaper for them to buy and run a car than rent one.

Jesda - you all live in hope

Re: Car for $600

Does $600 include gas!? 5000 miles, even at 20mpg would be about $750 @$3/gal

Re: Car for $600

Well if you convert 600 US to CAN, at the time I made a similar journey the car was 800, it was across Canada and it was a good ol' chev 305 (circa 1980 Station Wagon, ze best!) On our way back home, literally in the driveway the tranny hose blew!

I guess you should choose a car that you could fix if needed to on the road, but from personal experience I would go with a 305.

EDIT: Before we took the trip, all general maintenance was done, but aside from that nothing. Oh and we spray canned the paint back to life. She went through ice and snow storms too.

Re: Car for $600

that 25 a day is high...my rental places only charge an extra ten bucks a day for being under 24...shop around and I bet you'll do better than 25 a day extra charge...and you'll have reliability and the knowledge that you can get it stuck in four feet of mud on a rockcrawling trail and all you have to do is call for another one, because that one "broke down on the side of the road."

Oh yes...never ever EVER buy anything that was once a rental.

Re: Car for $600

I say do it in a 1977-1991 Chevrolet Caprice with the 305, cheap, big, and they go for ever. if you want one with class, go with the '77-'79 version coupe, nice looking cars IMO. but it would be easier to find a mid 80s four door, and very easy to get one for $600.

oh, and cheap to fix if you need to.

Yup, I agree. Caprice, Delta 88 or LeSabre, maybe even a Pontiac Parisienne too! Basically any of the 1977-90 B bodies.
