I need some help for a fellow forum memebr elsewhere. They plan to go accross America covering 5,000 or so miles, and need a car to do it in, 2-4 memebers so four seats essential, they only have $600 or so to spend, so recommendations would be good!
Thanks

Get a Corolla or a late 90s Chevy Nova (its basically a Corolla). Toyotas are a little less annoying to work on than Hondas. An old Caprice (NOT DIESEL!) might be okay. |

I think you should be able to get a deal for $150/week.
You gotta register the car, insure it, etc etc...I think it'll be easier just to rent.
SOunds like its gonna be a hell of an adventure. |

Good luck finding a $600 car that could haul 4 for 5000 miles! And let them write a book afterwards |

They have a Perminant address in San Fran, so registration and insurance isnt a problem in that respect, it's still going to be cheaper for them to buy and run a car than rent one.

On our way back home, literally in the driveway the tranny hose blew!
I guess you should choose a car that you could fix if needed to on the road, but from personal experience I would go with a 305.
EDIT: Before we took the trip, all general maintenance was done, but aside from that nothing. Oh and we spray canned the paint back to life. She went through ice and snow storms too.

Oh yes...never ever EVER buy anything that was once a rental. |

oh, and cheap to fix if you need to. |

oh, and cheap to fix if you need to. | Yup, I agree. Caprice, Delta 88 or LeSabre, maybe even a Pontiac Parisienne too! Basically any of the 1977-90 B bodies. |
