Say you're shooting a sunset. The top part of the scene with the sky and sun will be much brighter than the lower part with the beach/field/whatever. This confuses the camera's light meter, since the light is so different between the two parts of the scene. You'll usually get either a nicely exposed sunset with a dark foreground or vise versa. A GND filter is basically a transparent square filter that's tinted on the top part. When this is mounted in front of the lens, the top part of the filter brings down the brighter part of the scene, making it easier to get an even exposure.

I would imagine that the GND would be much easier to set afterwards in software than with the mechanical filter.
Excellent shot above Gary. You never fail to impress. |

Also the nice thing is that the GND feature doesn't just do exposure, but contrast, saturation, etc. |

CS4 and LR2 use the same version of Adobe Camera Raw, so you get all the same neat tools. I have 5.3 with LR2. Quote:

Some comments I got today while shooting the Chicago River being dyed green with my 70-200 attached:
-Guy standing next to me: "That's a hell of a camera!"
-Guy somewhere behind me: "Dude's got a Canon for real!"
-Guy standing around me: "That guy's got the spy camera out!"
-Police officer: "What are you doing, taking pictures?"
-Police officer #2: "ahahaha... facebook! Bet you're gonna sell those pictures!" | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
