| Re: Daimler returns to Jaguar showrooms I was talking with my cousin last night, and he mentioned Daimler. He mentioned some of the history.
Daimler is actually the oldest British nameplate that's still on the market. What happened was something like this: in the 1890s, a group of British engineers licensed the engine and name from Daimler in Germany. I believe the first British Daimler went on sale about 1896.
Daimler in Germany continued on building its own cars under its own name, until just before World War I (again, I think) when the company renamed its brand Mercedes after the daughter of one of its dealers (Mercedes Jellinek?).
In the 1920s, the Daimler corporation merged with Benz, hence, Mercedes-Benz.
Daimler in Britain was bought out by Jaguar in roughly the early 1960s, and after that, most of its cars were badge-engineered Jag sedans (saloons, I guess). Jag stopped using the name a few years ago.
However, the truly luxurious brand that Ford owns which could be a great alternative to a Maybach or Rolls-Royce is Lagonda. Aston Martin owns it, but it hasn't been available since about 1994, when they built a few 4-door Vantages (except for the Lagonda Vignale showcar a few years ago). |
